Where Have All the Prospects Gone?: The State of TrekLit in 2017

I like the return of floating profile pictures of main characters above planets.

I also thought it was a bit of a throwback. Hey, Dayton's the one who always says that Patrick Stewart's face moves books.

In the last years of the Legends canon in SW the direction and book count per author was narrowed down to arguably three or four people-one of them being Troy drive the EU into the ground Denning.

It really was a problem.

I haven't read those books specifically, but in general I actually like having fewer authors working on a series, it keeps things more consistent. Sure if you don't like one of the authors it can be annoying, but if you like them all then it can be nice.

Dunno If this has been posted yet but I just got an email from Amazon that Architects of Infinity has been pushed back to December. Doing a search, it seems DRG's Original Sin will now be released in September

That sucks. I mean, that's probably good for DSC but it still kinda sucks.. We didn't have a VGR book for more than a year now.

Margaret Clark is one of the Editors who works with the writers for the Star Trek books series along with Ed Schelessinger.

Specifically, Ed is the sole in-house editor overseeing Star Trek publishing at Pocket Books (along with other media tie-in properties), while Margaret works in a freelance capacity editing the Star Trek novels.

And both Ed and Margaret have been heavily involved with Star Trek publishing for many, many years now.

IIRC, it was Margaret who suggested Tony Daniel and John Jackson Miller to Ed. For what it's worth. :)

Late to this topic, but in my case I approached Ed in the very beginning, expressing that I'd always wanted to write Trek. Margaret thereafter contacted me about an ebook -- and, later, the novels. Prey being a trilogy rather than a single book was my wild scheme, but she championed it and made it happen. (And was enormously patient during the year-plus it took me to get it done!)

I've done tie-in work for licenses I care deeply about and some I'm not as passionate about, which will happen when you write a lot. I don't think it's necessarily a prerequisite that you already belong to a certain fandom to be able to write a good story for a property -- I'm proud of some of those works that fall into the second group -- but I think when everything does line up, the results can be special for all involved.

And as it was mentioned earlier, I do obviously endorse the "starting small" method, even for established authors -- I needed the e-book to get a sense of the ground rules for writing Trek in general before I could ever consider a novel, and doing the novel helped me understand what the other ongoing storylines were in the litverse in a way that made me think I could pull off a trilogy.

So ... what is the 2017 schedule now?

Technically you're one month off for each release (at least officially the book appearing at the end of a month is the release for the next month).

You're missing the ebook novella DTI: Shields of the Gods, scheduled for June 19th, and Titan Books translation of the first Prometheus book Fire against Fire, schedule for November 28th.

So we do have some gaps then.
I'm a little surprised there is not a single TOS novel or novella all year, but we did get Miasma, Elusive Salvation, and the Legacy trilogy last year, so that might be why.
