News Jason Isaacs Joins Star Trek: Discovery as Captain Lorca

I think we agree on the basic concept then.
Can you really blame a woman for once in a while throwing in a snarky comment when stuff like this happens again and again? ;)

Blame you? No Emillia. I can't blame you. Because you are right. For every show that gets it right, 10 don't. For every movie that shows what women or people of color truly are (human) 10 will fuck it up.

But this show has, in terms of casting, already done more right than previous Star Trek shows. So do I get your disappointment on the higher number of men? Yes. But let's also celebrate what is being done right. Hell, if Jason Isaacs' Lorca turns out to be Spanish (someone mentioned that the name is Spanish) the two captains in this show would be non-white. How cool is that??

I'm also truly hoping for even more diversity from this cast, just like you.

Good casting. I've never heard of most of the cast but I'm sure he'll elevate the product. As to whether he dies, I wouldn't be surprised. The problem with having the First Officer be the 'main' character is that they can't do anything official without permission from the superior officer onboard. It's different when you're a captain and the nearest admiral is light years away, at least according to Starfleet logic.

I'm not sure if I'm happy or not. I'll wait until I see some episodes before I make a judgement. I see Sarek is going to be in it, but I am curious, is Spock born yet during this time period?

okay thanks. I read the entire article and see that Discovery takes place 10 years before Kirk and Spock, etc on the Enterprise.

It does, according to the info so far. So given what was established in "The Menagerie" two-parter, Spock is on Enterprise as Science Officer for Pike.

I'm trying to work out in my head if they've been to Talos IV yet, though...

Really, being the Captain on a show where the First Officer is the lead means you're one of the least likely to die...until the producers are ready for her arc to take a turn.

I really like this casting as Issacs is a phenomenal actor. But, diversity and representation DO matter (especially on a show like Trek), so I can understand those who were disappointed (or at least, not surprised) in his casting. There are still some pretty major crew roles on both the Discovery and Shenzou that have yet to be anounced (Camo on Discovery, Engineer on both, Tactical), so I'm hoping they can even things out a bit more with the rest of the cast.

Me, I'm personally disappointed we seemingly have another Trek show where the captain(s) are human and not alien. The most interesting episodes of ENT for me were the Andorian ones. How cool would it be to explore the crew dynamics where the command of the ship has a completely different culture and management style than much of the crew? Ready-made drama and character development.

Most of the aliens look exactly like humans anyway so maybe we've had dozens of alien captains and just never known it:bolian:

Awake was one of my favorite new shows in 2012... very good actor... as for the male/female ratio, possibly could be closer to a real "baker's dozen" half, but the military/aerospace field is dominated by men at this time. Not really put off by this specifically, and will wait for the execution.

i would've been happy had Isaacs Captain Lorca had been the Main lead instead of "Number One".

Same here. He's just such a brilliant actor it is almost a waste of talent if they don't plan on him. Then again, there has been alot of time since the show was announced. Maybe some things changed to a degree. They certainly have a phenomenal main cast selection compared to any other trek series so far. Prepare to be pleasantly surprised by their performances.

There are at least 4 actors now(2 of each sex mind you and of various ethnicities) that could potentially "steal the show"(and that's excluding Jones who is a very good actor as well) and normally, I would let the first season be the judge of who(perhaps more than one?) should be the "protagonist"(see what happened with Yar and Worf or Kes and Seven).

Oh, and btw, Lorca is indeed a Spanish name. Chillean, Mexican etc Lorca surnames are Spanish in origin. Picard was a very British sounding Frenchman if you think of it, it doesn't matter really, but any of these would be good since they haven't been represented before. Also, he has an immense range(including spy in the tuxedo movie, which is a definitive presence role), so he could certainly be a great Vulcan captain. Only Lorca sounds more Andorian, if it was an alien name.

Stargate managed alright having the lead be the person who goes on the missions while the big boss stays behind. Before Discovery was even announced I thought that such an approach would be interesting for Star Trek.
