Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

This guy not only has a wife, but one who would actually buy him an subscription that will lead to their house being filled with model ships?

I don't care what the balance on his checking account says. This guy is the richest man in the world.
Agreed- she is a gem!

My wife and I balance- she likes her makeup and beauty things, I have my hobbies...

Give him a break. Not everyone was able to start a subscription right off the bat (I still can't), but everyone who does helps this collection to continue.
humour............
Yep, it wasn't a personal attack. It was a metaphor for the situation in which this person finds him/herself.

It's traditionally problematic getting into part-based collections at a late stage. Publishers such as Eaglemoss don't want to be stuck with stock that they can't sell. If you start long after most other people, expect not to get everything that you want, wait for stock to become available or pay through the nose on eBay.

No worries. I took it in good fun.

Eaglemoss advertised this ship subscription for several months on Mission Log Pod and I finally decided to give it a try. If they're advertising for new subscribers, I assumed that meant they have, or could readily get, every ship in their lineup for those new subscribers.

The Jellyfish finally arrived today. Nice model. It's quite big but there don't seem to be many metal parts, if any. Difficult to tell but I think it's all plastic, as was the holo-ship.

Perhaps they will if demand is high enough or perhaps they have a get-out clause in the small print.

There are many out-of-stock back issues on the UK site.

Received the oversized 1701, 1701-A plaque AND two more binders today! Can't believe it only took about a week to get the binders considering it took 6 months for the last two. I really love the oversized 1701. It's very well done and heavy! The entire saucer section is metal and the paint job is almost flawless. There are just two "windows" just below the bridge section where the black paint isn't quite lined up. Really can't tell unless looking very closely. Overall, an excellent rendition of the classic ship and even better that I only paid around $44 for it.

Do these guys make a V'Ger starship? I think it's weird that they do all these obscure ships...but V'Ger (which was the main focus of an entire movie) hasn't received a look yet!

Nothing confirmed yet that I'm aware of. Wouldn't surprise me if they eventually made one down the line. They're doing some pretty obscure stuff lately.

I think the cheapest option would be to use a pearlescent, translucent finishing coat that catches the light and changes colour when viewed from different angles. Perhaps applied over a dark blue background.

I thought the actual model was a windsock dipped in cement.

but it seems it was likely not:

I seem to remember a sketch from Spinrad of how he wanted the ship to look.

I'm thinking ramscoop.

While the metal parts do give the replica a nice 'heft', I ffnd they degrade the appearance some. They are not cast with crisp detail and the plastic parts look so much better. The Breen is one of worst offenders since it has identical detail parts cast in both materials and the metal ones look soft and blurred. If they resort to pure plastic and just stick a metal weight inside I would be happy.

I think the biggest problem for some obscure stuff is that existing characters models don't exist...it's why every ship of the week from Voyager and enterprise has turned up, but TNG stuff hasn't...the TOS remaster provides older ships, but the movie era and TNG /early Ds9arent so easy.....hence no Tin Man, no Husnocks, no Merchantman or any of its redresses. Theres some noticeable gaps.

Yep- some of the older pre-CGI ships have to be created one by one as a mesh for production instead of just running it through an import filter.

They have come out with some of the Franken-Fleet kitbashes so there is hope, it just takes longer

I don't remember any of the kitbashes coming out...there's a few odd choices here and there (shuttles in the main ship line...I couldn't justify the separate shuttle sets, so there's an odd disconnect in our family's otherwise complete collection.) do you you mean stuff like the Centaur ?

The Centaur is one, yes, but a mesh was already built for that one for the "Official Fact Files", which is why the bridge scale and surface details are incorrectly done from the original miniature built by Buckner, which used a Reliant bridge and a lot more greebles attached. CG models can be kitbashed in the same way that physical models can, so long as the source materials exist to make them. For example, now that they have Voyager and Maquis Raider meshes, they'll be making the Yeager. A Hutzel can be made with an Excelsior, Enterprise-B, Connie refit and some other spare parts. They're also talking about doing a Curry/Raging Queen model (wondering if they'll be considered the first official "thru-deck carriers" like many speculate they are), and they already have the Excelsior and Reliant models to do those. It also looks like most, if not all the Wolf-359 ships are going to be done, which are just variants on the base refit-Connie, Galaxy and Nebula designs with some minor modifications.

Isn't the Akira class a small thru-deck?
It has forward launch bays and at the back of the primary hull larger doors to retrieve...

As originally planned, yes. Its action at Sector 001 gave it more of a disposition of a battleship or torpedo frigate, with all the photon tubes it had. Like its predecessor, the Miranda class, the Akira seems uniquely suited to be the most versatile multi-purpose fleet workhorse of its generation.

My Negh'Var arrived today. (Shout out to baronvlad on eBay). I was lucky that, for once, an order arrived on a day off when I was here to get it, instead of having to wait a day to go pick it up at the post office.

This ship has a reputation of being one of the lemons of the series. I wasn't sure what I would think since I think I tend to be a bit more forgiving than most. (I actually like the Enterprise-C, for instance, even though I understand why people are irked about the lack of surface detail on the top of the engineering section).

Unfortunately, I think I'll have to agree this one was a disappointment. The lack of impulse drives and transparent plastic for the nacelles don't bother me much, but the proportions of the "body" and "neck" unfortunately combine to create the illusion of a very stubby-looking ship (interesting how the Micro Machine version seemed to avoid this problem). To make matters worse, the canons on the underside extend just a bit too much and end up looking like the oversized landing gear on the toy die cast planes you had as a kid.

I'll have to say this is one of the bigger letdowns since the Tholian ship with its unsightly seamline.

"Negh'Vars, everybody needs good Negh'Vars
With a little understanding, you can find the perfect blend
Negh'Vars, should be there for one another
That's when good Negh'Vars become good friends"

ETA: The stanza above is likely only going to make sense to Aussies or Brits.
