Assuming this is the Discovery, and not the Chinese vessel that turns up in the series as well, I'm much happier with the design.

Preferred the original design, I thought it was a bold design direction and it was inspired by the Planet of the Titans Enterprise which was cool.
This one is a bit less TOSy and a bit more Akira/NX looking which to me is a bit uninteresting.

I could not AGREE MORE. The new design is very bland, it's an idea we've seen since 1982 (Miranda class), that we've seen again with the Akira (which was much better looking) and that we've recently seen with ENT. Stick with the uglier design guys, at least it's bold and original looking, albeit a bit weird.

I think it's pretty clear that the wireframe ship is not the Discovery (as its early? design photos show up in the footage too) . It is more likely the Shenzhou.
Not so sure. The TrekYards boys were given a sneak peak into the redesign of the Discovery a few months back so they seem to know that this wire frame we see here is the Discovery.
I hope it is the Shenzhou too though.

I doubt this is the Discovery. I agree that it's probably the Shenzhou. The video also featured drawings similar to the previous teaser, so I think that meant that the main ship will retain the same basic design we saw before, while this is a different ship.

As for the design itself, the wireframe ship's nacelles look a bit like the Jem'Hadar fighters, or the Klingon D5, perhaps pointing to John Eaves as the designer. I kind of wish the nacelles were a bit more TOS, but it's fine.

This is not the Discovery. Not even the Trekyard guys this is the Discovery. Although they say that the Discovery that is seen is most probably (99.87%) not the final version, this particular ship is not believed to be the Discovery. As for the ship, I really think everything is going down to the skinning. If they will use TOS style skins or even the skin that we see on the Discovery on the shots of the trailer this could be a plausible TOS era ship. I really hope they will not use some Voyager type skinning because that would put out seriously out of time.

Yeah, the TrekYards guys definitely did not say this is the Discovery. They said the version of the Discovery seen in the teaser last year and in those pre-production photos has been significantly revised, but it is not the Akira-NX-01-lineage ship.

I was never wild about the Planet of the Titans like Discovery as shown in the, now ancient, teaser video. I get that they are building a whole pre TOS universe, but I do hope that this is the a Discovery and not another ship of the line.

That said. It could be interesting to see a Trek from the perspective of the crew of a ship that is not the newest, sleekest design. Until everyone puts in for a transfer.

That's not the new USS Discovery. That's probably the USS Shenzhou. Leave that generic looking ship in video games where it belongs. It's great for a secondary/background ship (which it is) but not for a hero ship which needs enough character to stand out for a new TV show. That's a very common design we've seen a million times before.

Not Discovery.

The images shown pinned to the board appear to be Discovery at about the stage of development we've already seen it - months old. The ship is rendered there as a stationary object with the camera being moved to different positions to get different angles - notice that the starfield is a single slide that doesn't change position or perspective from shot to shot.

In any event, neither the renderings of Discovery or the wireframe of Shenzhou (or whatever) suggest in any way an intent to maintain close continuity with the TOS look. "Shenzhou" fits right in there with Enterprise, ST Online and other modern Trek stuff that Eaves has worked on; Discovery borrows some of that as well as the Star Wars aesthetic of the late 70s. No TOS.

The (actual? Ralph McQuarrie) Discovery looks really appropriate in my honest opinion.

It fits in with a lost era of starship design that could conceivably have occurred around TOS - it has elements of the TMP era vessels - but is an entirely new design, and not the usual homogeneous video game type stuff. I assume the wireframe is the USS Shenzhou, and from appearances, it might be an antique, from just after Archer's time.

The prerequisite for a great design is an instantly recognizable silhouette, and DSC has it.

I really hope it hasn't been changed to this. One thing I want to see in Discovery is a new design team with fresh takes on the basic Star Trek design ethic. John Eaves is a really good designer, and I like most of his work, but we've had 20 years of John Eaves take on Star Trek. I want to see a new direction for some of this stuff, and whether you liked it or not, the Abrams films certainly had a different look then we were used to. New people were reinterpreting the old designs. I have some issues with the Discovery design that was presented over the summer, and I hope there are some changes and refinement, but I liked that fact it was something very different. I want to see more of that in this show. Otherwise it just starts to feel stale.

Christ Allmighty give it a rest already!!!

We haven't even seen a final design for Discovery yet. From the first teaser on, the designers for the show have said this was still a WIP, and that the mesh we saw in the video was a crude version of that work in progress.

Atleast wait untill we've seen the actual final design and then start the usual offended fanboy shitstorm....
