I think the episode is fun, just it's one of those early DS9 episodes that would be more comfortable on TNG.
I actually loved this one when I was younger, though on a recent rewatch I didn't think it held up that well. It wasn't terrible, it was just OK.
My favorite details were two little throwaways: Odo's reference to Morn as androgynous, and that shot of a blizzard on the Promenade.

I like it, but I prefer the earlier seasons to the later ones anyway.
Imaginary Dax was... fun.
When I first saw the episode I didn't like the idea that this anomaly was created by he crew imagining a terrible spatial anomaly, but now I think that's really clever.
Also I liked Quark and Odo's ways of taking advantage of their imaginations.

I can't imagine being in Bashir's shoes. Having to play referee with real woman and fantasy woman in same room.
That's a pretty classic scene. I liked Dax's actual reaction something about is that really how you want me submissive and docile, followed by the doppelganger referring to her as a cold fish.

Agree about baseball being boring. I can only bring myself to give a crap when the Red Sox are making a playoff run and barely then, and now the stats of the game have been solved and so many cheaters have been found that any successful player is viewed with suspicion.
It never seemed the group were in real danger except for that one spot where the void was expanding, but that doesn't bother me. There are a decent amount of episodes where there isn't any major threat to everyone's lives. I enjoy this episode for the fun and for the introspective view of the characters.
You can't have every single episode be about imminent doom or death. It puts too much strain on the audience and diminishes truly unique danger. It takes more character development to have episodes which feature personal growth over non-lethal situations but those are some of the better episodes. However FWIW Worf does advise Nog to "Catch him and Kill him" for the guy who missed home plate.
