Lucy, yes, THAT Lucy is the reason we have Star Trek and later Star Wars and every other bit of Sci-Fi that took its cue and inspiration from Gene Roddenberry's vision. Without Lucy liking Roddenberry's idea the show never would have happened. Roddenberry would go back to being a police officer/occasional writer, George Lucas would most likely not have made Star Wars (Trek made a big impression on him, so who knows), ILM would not exist so special effects would still look like stop motion clay-mation. Yeah, I could go on and on, lets just say without the funny red head from "The Lucy Show" we wouldn't have the show that literally changed science fiction as we know it. Period.

Arguably, Lucas was influenced more by the Saturday matinee serials, primarily "Flash Gordon". Plus, 20th Century Fox already had financial success with SF, specifically, the "Planet of the Apes" series, so chances are, SW would have been developed even if Trek was never created.

Gene was well past his career as a policeman by the time he created Star Trek. He was a professional writer and had already created a TV show ( the Lieutenant ) and had numerous writing/producing credits. More than likely he would have continued to be a writer and producer, while pitching new shows to the networks and studios.

Another person who thinks Star Trek invented and /or inspired everything. Stanley Kubrick and Arthur C. Clark started work on "2001" in 1964. Rod Serling began work on the first screenplay for "Planet of the Apes" in 1963, and make-up tests were filmed in early 1966. But yes, both films were released in 1968, or in the year 2 "AST" (after Star Trek).

At least science fiction has progressed beyond the atomic bomb radiation mutated giant insects who devour human beings from the 1950's. :ack:

Those were fun movies to watch when I was kid. THEM! was a favorite. Of course literary SF was usually way ahead of SF Cinema.

I never said anything about Trek or Roddenberry inventing everything sci-fi, but if Lucy had not given the green light it was plausible Roddenberry would never had another chance with Trek. I did add he would still write his screenplays as well. I know we all have our little "what ifs". Mine is as stated above and I rest my case. So there!

Lucy was the Big Chief at Desilu Studios that gave GR the money to develop Star Trek as a possible network show, so maybe she was partially responsible for the eventual success of the ST franchise.

Thing was, Star Wars was 20th Century Fox's last gamble as if it had failed they would have gone bankrupt! With the success of SW they went onto the Alien series as well...

Given that she could have squashed the whole enchilada in '64 or '65 with an east-west head shake, I think we all need to be most grateful to the quirky redhead from Jamestown.

She also helped launch Arnold Schwarzenegger's career, so....
