Actors who could have pulled off Tom Paris?

Emperor Norton

Captain
Captain
When they were auditioning people for Tom Paris, they kept looking for an actor like Robert Duncan McNeill, who had played Nick Locarno on TNG. And they kept looking and could not find that right actor, so they finally decided just to cast Robert Duncan McNeill himself. Reflecting on it, are there any other actors who would have done well in that role?

Ned Vaughn, the actor who played Picard's ginger-haired friend Ensign Cortin "Corey" Zweller, in "Tapestry" would've done well in the part. You might also know him from Apollo 13, where he had a bit part as the Capcom astronaut who's on duty, when Jim Lovell commits his "medical mutiny."

I'm not sure of his name. I think it might be George Newburn. IIRC he played the son-in-law in the Steve Martin Father of the Bride movies. IMO, I felt he and McNeill vaguely resembled each other. In a boy next door kind of way.

I think the guy who played Trip in Enterprise could have done a good job. Similar appearance and all.

Connor Trineer.

-> Saw the actor in an episode (excellent, besides) of Close to Home, directed by a certain Roxann Dawson! ;) .

Connor's an interesting choice, but I must admit ... I can't see him having been cast as Tom Paris. He doesn't seem "boyish" to me, whereas McNeill still kind of retained that. And it's a quality I feel the character needed for any number of reasons. I mean ... can you see Connor's "Tom" hanging out with Harry Kim? I have a difficult time imagining this ...

Honestly, I can't see any other than Robert Duncan McNeill in that role.
I agree. It's probably because I'm so used to him but I think he was perfect for it. He had that good looking boyish charm and that goofy cocky attitude that worked perfectly for the character.

I agree. Nobody else could have pulled it off. If they cast someone else, it'd be a completely different character.

I had the idea of Bruce Boxleitner, though he may have been too old. It is that projection of being boyish and innocent, but also kind of an ass if the character requires it. He's Eddie Haskell.

I think RDM Is fine, a capable actor but hardly brilliant.

I would have preferred them just to make the character Locarno. I read the reasons why they didn't, but still don't agree and Locarno would have made more sense. And perhaps his crime would actually have meant something beyond episode 1.

P.S. glad I'm not the only one to go there with the title. And even being gay, I'm going... "nah".

Robert Duncan McNeil as Tom Paris in ST: Voyager is irreplaceable. That said, for a similar character, I would have said Alec Baldwin in his thirties.
