DuckTales reboot coming to Disney XD in 2017

The cast for the DuckTales reboot has been announced, with very welcome news about who'll be playing Scrooge McDuck: David Tennant!

Joining Tennant’s Scrooge McDuck will be Danny Pudi, Ben Schwartz, and Bobby Moynihan as Huey, Duey, and Louie, respectively. The main cast is rounded out with Toks Olagundoye as Mrs. Beakley, Beck Bennett as Launchpad McQuack, and Kate Micucci as Webby Vanderquack.

I'm not familiar with any of those actors. Apparently they're mostly sitcom actors, and the new Launchpad is a Saturday Night Live cast member, but Kate Micucci voiced Velma in a recent Scooby-Doo series. It sounds like they're going in a different direction with the kids than in the original show, where Russi Taylor played all three nephews and Webby.

That cast is pretty awesome. Moynihan is also on SNL, by the way. Micucci is one half of the comedy music duo Garfunkel & Oates (with their own short-lived sitcom), appeared on several episodes of The Big Bang Theory and Another Period, is a frequent guest on @midnight, and will be a regular on the up-coming Powerless.

I have to say, though, while his accent will undoubtedly be authentic, it will still be kinda weird to have Uncle Scrooge speak with Tennant's voice.

I adore Kate Micucci as part of Garfunkel & Oates and I think she'll be a great Webby.

But David Tennat as Scrooge McDuck? That's all kinds of awesome. He damn well better be using his Scottish accent!

I over heard someone at work mention the Tennant casting. I have barely seen much of Dr Who but knew his name. What I have seen of him I really like. Which was reassuring because Scrooge McDuck and Ducktales that is part of my childhood DNA like Star Wars and the Muppets. I was obsessed with that show. I drew all the characters. For my 4th grade Art class we had a knitting assignment which I picked a picture of Scrooge. I made it much more detailed and spend more time on it than any of the other kids on their own projects. So much that I continued to work on it when the rest of the class moved on to other stuff. But our teacher was so happy with what I was doing she let me take my time!

A few samples of work from the various cast members:

Never cared for the adult baby sketch myself. Though he does well with what he's given, I suppose. I can easily imagine him doing a Launchpad voice though, which is what is important.

As for Kate Micucci, here is an example of her acting skills:

And in regards to Toks Olagunduye, while she's British she's good with accents, so I imagine they'll have her doing some type of American accent here.

Aside from Donald, they don't really sound like the previous versions, which is probably for the best. Scrooge just sounds like The Scottish Doctor.

But the animation is very nice! I can't wait.

Hmm, it's in a modern style that looks comparatively crude to me. The original was frequently animated by Tokyo Movie Shinsha, easily the best animation studio of '90s TV (they also did the best-made Batman: TAS and Superman: TAS episodes, and of course they made Akira), so it was often quite beautifully done. This new style is very different and it'll take some getting used to. It's also a much greater departure from Carl Barks's art style, for those who care about such things.

Donald Duck being a central character is a major turn-off for me. I hate Donald Duck. I was glad that the original mostly avoided him and featured Launchpad in his place.
