So many "ifs" floating around at the moment but I'm quite certain that, whatever happens, this won't be the last we hear of Alec Peters. "If" it is judged that he can no long participate in any Star Trek related activities there are plenty of other Sc-Fi TV franchises he could use to propagate his money making schemes. Obviously, there's a great deal of cross pollination with the fanbases but I'd imagine there will still be some people out there who will fall for his racketeering.
True, but the Trek fanbase was tailor made for his brand of thievery.
1. It has a huge fan base.
2. Its huge fan base has a not-insignificant percentage of fans willing to spend money on things related to the franchise outside of movie tickets.
3. Its huge fanbase has a not-insignificant percentage of fans disaffected by the current state of the franchise.
4. Up until this year, the franchise turned a blind eye to people performing minor infringements upon their property.
In other words, there are a good number of people who like Trek who are also morons. Yes, Star Wars probably has more fans but I'd argue they aren't as rabid about protecting "George's vision", the current direction of the movies is seen as good by an overwhelming percentage of fans (not so 10 years ago), and SW is owned by Disney so good luck getting away with shit there.
Could you do something with Battlestar fans? Maybe. But that's just a fraction of Trek's. There doesn't seem to be much demand. If there were the you'd think NBCU would be on it.
There's a ton of nerd-ragey demand for Firefly - but another comparatively small fan base. Pretty sure Fox would come down on him hard too.
Babylon 5? Meh. No one cares.
No, Trek was is best - if not only - chance at using someone else's intellect and hard work to personally profit from and actually become a player in Hollywood. If he would've had a fucking ounce of humility through all this he probably could've salvaged something but - by the Ghost of Roddenberry I've never seen someone who's so far up their own ass before.
