Kirk's hair color

Maybe this is nit picking, but I was watching "Amok Time" and I compared the color of Kirk's hair in season's 1 and 2 and noticed it's lighter than in the 3rd season and I was wondering why. Did they do something to the hair piece. Sometimes I noticed it was a bit thinner in the front at times than others.

I noticed that his hair pieces were of differing qualities. One was excellent and appeared to be as real as possible. Another toupee looked like a cheaper version used as his backup model while Numero Uno wig was getting cleaned. Being bald is a bummer.

Some of the behind the scenes notes makes it sound like Shatner's piece would "permanently disappear" sometimes, so they'd need replacing. (Majel's too.)

I wish people wouldn't make fun of him for this. He did what he had to do to project a great-looking image that added something to the show.

My one complaint is that I wish he had gone back to "Kirk hair" for the movies. He should have worn a similarly styled light brown toupee, but with a touch of gray coming in. That would have been cool. As it was, his movie hair looked like that of a vain, affluent guy who enjoys the soft life in Malibu.

Yeah I didn't like his hair for the movies either! The only times it wasn't too bad was in The Undiscovered Country and Generations! His TV syrup was very good and most of us didn't know it was a rug until some of his acting friends revealed it later on!

When the show started it was revealed that it had a lot of children as it's viewers so Telly was advised to drop the cigarettes because they're bad for people's health, so he started sucking lolly pops instead, later on he was asked to stop sucking lolly pops because they were bad for the kiddies teeth!

I always thought he had a transplant in the 70s and we got the movie and TJ Hooker hair from then on. I hadn't realized he was still in a hair piece.

The Toupee blog is a pretty good historical layout of Shatner's career, with a lot of rare pics. Tongue in cheek, sure, but lots of information about The Shat you won't find many other places.

I wouldn't be surprised if he's involved in it in some way. ;)

Shatner's TOS toupée worked fine for that series, but the TOS movies did need him sporting a new rug. The one he wore for TMP was the best of the lot. After that, he started wearing a huge hat of hair that seemed intended to remain secure on his cranium, whilst Shatner did his semi-stunts, like rolling on the ground, or having fights. It didn't look natural, at all, especially if he had wind in his face. The hair would just bounce up and down, almost uniformly, rather than behaving as hair naturally would. But to see him with his TOS rug on would've been a disaster. It wouldn't have worked.

I don't see why. His TOS hairstyle suggested a well-groomed officer who never thought much about his hair. His movie styles, and I think ST-5 was the worst, looked increasingly like a man who's making an effort in the hair department and trying to look younger than he is.

Even worse, the change in hair color from TOS to the movies was another mark of vanity that Kirk shouldn't have had. "I'm a soldier, not a diplomat." That's why I think light brown hair, short like on TOS, with some gray coming in would have been perfect for the films.
