Jamie Reagan watches the CFL? and other cross-border changes

Okay, I've noticed that in the Bell Fibe TV commercial with the guys in the barber shop, what's on the TV set in the commercial changes depending on what channel the commercial is airing on. So on CTV, a sports channel owned by the CTV people will be featured, while on Global TV, a sports network owned by those who own Global is shown.

But I was really surprised to tune into Blue Bloods last Friday to see that they had done the same thing with the TV that was on in the background of a scene where Janko visits Jamie Reagan at his apartment. Apparently, he was watching an Argos vs Alouettes football game - the CFL that we have up here in Canada, not the NFL.

Is this something Canadian TV stations are doing a lot of now? Changing the show that's on a character's TVs and computers (in cases where what's onscreen is not important to the plot/dialogue, just scenery)

EDIT: Did anyone watch the show on CBS? Can you tell me what was actually playing on his TV?

I watched it. Unfortunately I don't remember and didn't save it on my DVR. I may get it on Demand later and check. That sounds interesting.

I'd find it really surprising if they went to that effort of make different versions. It's actually more likely that as a Canadian, you're noticing it more because of its familarity. A lot of those shows are filmed in Canada. Most people wouldn't notice a difference and would just chock it up as more football.

Blue Bloods is filmed on location in New York City. One of the few shows that still is, along with Law & Order: SVU.

Most likely it's exactly what LCC is describing: they just digitally edited the scene and replaced the NFL game (side note: isn't the NFL popular in Canada?) with a CFL game.

I don't watch Blue Bloods but I looked it up on CBS.com and it had the CFL game on the TV. Comcast on Demand showed the same thing.

Ahh, my Mistake. I didn't realize Blue Bloods wasn't. Still doesn't explain why Aragorn says he saw the same thing via CBS. On the flipside, I do hear about the CFL being popular with Americans, so that may be why. Also might be a technical goof.

Or the CFL paid them for product placement. Or they were a lot cheaper to show on the TV than the NFL.

That could be it. My original theory was that it would have been something that actually aired on a TV at the time of shooting, but even then, I think you have to pay for what's seen, I think. That's been my understanding anyway, in that they have to clear everything. It is kind of bizarre though.

Maybe there's a Canadian on the writing/production staff who slips in references occasionally. Kind of like how Canadian actors always used to pop up on 24 despite it being shot in L.A. (Not counting Kiefer. I don't think it was his doing.)

Fascinating...

My brother suggested that, within the confines of the story, it might have been a night when no NFL game was on and so he just watches whatever he can find.

Yeah, actually that does seem quite likely, and I think it happens more often than not in the industry. Sometimes we just don't notice it. Heck, I remember an episode of How I Met Your Mother that had a whole episode where they were trapped inside a Tim Hortons due to a snowstorm, and I remember reading that it was because at least one of the people in the production were Canadian. It was hilariously done too, with respect, and without falling prey to many of the stereotypes usually made when referencing Canadian culture. It struck me as truly Canadian.

Wasn't one of the actual stars of HIMYM a Canadian?

^ Ah yes, that's the one. So maybe that Tim Hortons ep was her idea?

In dealing with the NFL vs CFL it was most likely a case of not wanting to pay the licensing rights to use NFL footage.

Has this ever happened before? My exposure to American TV (not counting Trek of course) has basically been limited to Law & Order and its ilk, which has never used NFL footage, but have other shows been able to incorporate it?

The NFL tried to control who could make tweets about games. They absolutely control use of actual footage. They keep a tighter rein on it than the music industry.
