Eddie Redmayne wants to play The Doctor

In an interview on Radio 1 Breakfast, Eddie Redmayne says he wants to play The Doctor.

"Would I do it? Yeah! It's a great show."

"I do see the resemblance. I see the scarf, I see the coat, I see the bow tie.

"I'm also a huge fan of those actors, love Matt Smith. I suppose the briefcase has a Tardis vibe to it - so yeah!"

"It looks like a lot of work. I've spoken to Matt and those schedules are pretty rigorous. Maybe when I'm 73."
Considering he's contracted to do up to five Fantastic Beasts films, he'll be busy for awhile, but I could definitely see him in the role.

I admit, the Fantastic Beasts trailers and commercials have made me think, "Eddie Redmayne is doing his best 'Matt Smith as the Doctor' impression" and "David Yates got to make that Doctor Who film he was talking about." I can't say I have any interest in the film (as nothing about it has made me go, "Wow, I have to see that"), but there's a definite Who vibe to its look. Even the wizards using their wands look like the Doctor waving his Sonic Screwdriver around.

If the BBC wanted him, scheduling could be worked out in some way. We might have to settle for eight or nine episode seasons, though.

In all honesty, the only movie I've seen Eddie Redmayne in is Jupiter Ascending. So I'm going to be nice and pretend I haven't seen him in anything.

After that movie I just couldn't stop comparing him to Matt Smith. They sort of look alike IMO

Given the difficulty the BBC have in getting Cumberbatch and Freeman I think 8/9 episodes would be pushing it. Even taking into account that Sherlock runs for 90 minutes that's still only equivalent to 6 episodes of Who so frankly I'd rather they hired someone young and upcoming (Smith/Tennant/Davison) or an older somewhat famous character actor who's not remotely blockbuster famous (Hartnell/Troughton/Pertwee/McGann/Eccleston/Capaldi) or they hire a left field perfect for the role actor (Tom!) A younger actor may not stay too long, and an older actor may stay too long, but in both cases at least they'd be able to give the role their all while they're doing it.

I suppose the nicest thing one can say about Redmayne in JA is that of all the actors in the film he's the one who seems self-aware enough to realise its terrible and he decided to just go with it!

So once you've spent the season budget on his salary for the first episode - then what? :==_

Being posh and english what he's actually saying is he's never doing Doctor Who (English-english and class is confusing like that).

He's kind of that way in the interviews I've seen so it may not all be a put-on.

Given what has been suggested recently by the Mirror I wonder if the BBC might be fast-tracking someone like him into the position for the explicit reason of his being a Smith-lookalike.

OT:

Ugh. I hated that movie. While his performance is EXCELLENT, it's the wrong story being told. The more interesting one is of his wife. I would rather have seen the story from her point of view.

But, he's quite good in that role.

The relevant segment of Redmayne's "Children in Need" skit...

Having just seen the movie last weekend, all I could think about was that FBawtFt was basically his audition tape for Doctor Who.. And what's more, I'd approve.. I think he'd be a great Doctor.

The icing on the cake was having the wife lean over about halfway through the film and whisper "Wow, he's really looking and acting like the Doctor."

I still haven't seem or read all of HP but my oldest daughter is reading the books and because this is a prequel, we went to see it, as it wouldn't spoil them for her. I haven't seen Redmayne in much (I don't like biopics or musicals, so that's 3 of his films out for starters) but really liked him in this and I could totally see him as The Doctor.

I didn't know Matt had auditioned for the role of Newt, probably just as well, as I'd have been imagining how he'd have played every scene.
