What little I've read of the last few days' comments sounds just like everywhere else. Never in my long life of observing elections have I heard the supporters of a WINNER spout so much anger and venom (and naivety about what their candidate represents) as we are hearing from Trump's camp. I remember being taught as a child not to be a sore loser. But does anyone teach kids not to be sore winners?! The same people who just spent eight years delegitimizing Obama are now telling those of us who are unhappy about -- or outright terrified of -- the prospect of a Trump presidency to "suck it up". The lack of human empathy is appalling.

Why I am so offended my good sir, I happen to be 19 years of age and an intelligent and competent person. Get ready for eight happy prosperous years!
From the tone of the comment that inspired my question, I would've guessed 9, not 19.

I sincerely hope that you “Don’t get it”. That the Democratic Party continues its slide to the left and fully into the “Hate America” group that are now rioting in the streets.
Remember how some Republicans were promising armed revolution a week ago if Trump didn't win?

It's amazing how some of you people seem to be totally unaware of American history prior to last Tuesday.

If Trump is a Nazi / Hitler, what do we do about it?

How is Trump different from George W Bush or Mitt Romney?

Someone just tweeted Mrs. Obama is an ape with heels. Which is horrible. But the outrage is no different than when anyone said anything unfavorable (but reasonable) about her before. If everything is racist then eventually nothing is.

The fascists have taken over the USA . Its official.

It's official. It's sad. And it's 100% true.

Best get ready for four years of continuous disappointment (at the very least).

Someone just tweeted Mrs. Obama is an ape with heels.

Not "someone", but West Virginia senior official Pamela Ramsey Taylor.

If that's not blatantly vile racism, I don't know what is.

I expect the Republicans to severely overplay their hand over the next two to four years, which will lead to the Democrats coming back in 2020/2024.

Question will be how much damage will be done between now and then?

Well in the case of Brexit if you look at how the different age groups voted (or at least thought to have voted), once you reached the 45+ bracket the majority voted to withdraw from the EU whilst those under 45 largely voted to remain.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-36619342

Out of the 30 areas with the highest oldest population 27 voted to leave

Out of the 30 areas with lowest gradutes 28 voted to leave

Out of the 30 areas with most people identifying as English all 30 vvoted to leave

You see the same here. Age is tightly correlated to Trump support: the older you are, the more likely it is you voted for Trump.

This is Boomers' (on up) final "fuck you" to the rest of the country, it seems.

How many of those lost jobs in the "rust belt" will have returned in 4 years time, 10%, 25%, 50%? I suspect it'll be at the lower end of the scale. Why because we as a consumer generally want to pay as little for an item as we can, whilst as a worker we want the highest wage possible. Someone has to pay that wage
, which is the consumer at the end of the day, that tin of beans you buy in the supermarket someone had to grow and harvest the beans, someone had to transport them to the canning factory, someone had to smelt the aluminium for the can, someone had to mine that aluminiuim, someone had run the factory, someone had to transport them from the factory to a distribution centre and so on. Each one of those workers wants the highest wage possible.

No jobs will "return." Jobs already shipped overseas aren't coming back in meaningful numbers, and they won't no matter what Trump does. It doesn't matter anyway--it's not why people voted for him.

Undocumented workers are not vilified by conservatives out of economic concerns, but racial ones.

What does that mean to you? Camps? All within the state, nothing outside the state, nothing against the state? Military aggression against our neighbors?

It's horrible. Truly.

"...classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House" - We ARE talking about Mrs. Trump, yes?

But for the last eight years (and more) everything is racist, sexist, etc. I think it's had a numbing effect. For frack's sake, pumpkin spice lattes (YUM!) are a signal of white privilege! WHAT??!

This seems about right: (BAD LANGUAGE WARNING):

Similar to Mr. Pie I would vote for Lucifer before I voted for Hillary Clinton. Unfortunately he wasn't running and I would also vote for Lucifer before Donald Trump.

BTW, for those panicking about healthcare Trump says he wants to keep coverage for pre-existing conditions. I think the wrong people are panicking.

Some have expressed concern that their political or social attitudes may cost them their jobs. That's bad, right? http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-grubhub-trump-robert-reed-1115-biz-20161114-column.html

Which is just plain dumb. For all these alleged crimes Clinton has committed over the years, why haven't the Republicans been able to actually pin anything on her? Are they seriously that incompetent?

But at what cost? If rates skyrocket and financial help no longer exists, what difference will it make to the people that need that coverage? It will be the same as the insurance companies not covering pre-existing conditions.

I've actually started answering the question "what happened to all the jobs" with "I took them". I dont own a business. I'm not even that far up the food chain (yet, at least). But every week, I pull some data or write some script that saves someone a days worth of work. By the end of the month I've saved my employer from having to hire somebody new. Every month is like that. I kill 3 jobs for every actual new hire. Some are blue collar. Many are clerical. Occasionally it's a professional. My company (of hundreds) has only one actual accountant.

China didn't take the jobs. The coders have.

Although that's cute and I could tell the same story about myself, it's not really true. That is, the jobs being automated aren't the same as the jobs displaced to other countries--and there are a lot of the latter. But those happened because foreign markets with cheaper labor (and, let's be honest, less regulation) opened up. Turns out people in China can make tiny springs (and virtually anything else you can imagine) just as well as Americans and will do it for 1/10 the price.

We can't compete with that. Trump seems to think he can put measures in place to change this, but he's wrong (or at least wrong that it wouldn't be ruinous to the US economy if he did so).

LOL, no. I'm elbow deep in this kind of data. China, in the last 5 years, has lost its cost advantage. A Chinese spring is *not* 1/10 the cost of an American one. At worst, it's 9/10ths, but it's not worth it because you have to wait 4 months for delivery. 6 if it's around Chinese New Year.

Fact is, the Chinese are making those springs using the same machine (usually built here or in Europe) as a factory here does. And the capital cost of that machine plus the material cost is the vast, vast majority the piece's total. Labor is nothing. A fraction of a cent, because one man is watching 20-30 machines, each of which is pushing out a thousand pieces an hour.

China's advantage is twofold: 1) logistics. If you want 10 million of something, they'll get it to you. 2) proximity to the Asian market. There's 300M middle class Chinese. Having a factory 100 miles from them makes for rapid turnaround.

If you're not making things by the literal ton, and you're not selling to China, and assuming you hadn't moved your tooling over there 20 years ago, there is no reason the move there now.

That's a good question. But if you were standing in front of a judge and they read of the findings of the FBI, would they let you go? Most of the things that Clinton did that are not in dispute (anymore) would land anyone else in jail.

And I don't vote for anyone that will "get" someone for making a video and then blame someone with a CAMERA for what people on the other side of the world did with GUNS.

With either candidate the first amendment was going to take a serious beating. Maybe congress can unite against him?

That's what I said eight years ago. If you know that you have a health problem then that's not insurance anymore.

I've actually started answering the question "what happened to all the jobs" with "I took them".
That's oddly awesome. :vulcan:

Got any links about this sort of thing? I'm genuinely curious--the labor cost advantage of developing economies (like China's) is an article of faith in these discussions, so if it's actually completely wrong I'd like to know (with evidence, that is)!
