Will Discovery have 7 seasons or more?

Not sure if a thread was made about this.

Do you guys think Discovery will have the traditonal 7 seasons or have more (8 or 9 seasons)?

We know that Discovery take place in 2255. Since there is 13 episodes for per season (unless Fuller decides to have a little more than 13 episodes for the later seasons), if only 7 seasons...would be 2255-2260 or to 2261 if they skip a few weeks in between an episode or 2 and also if they skip 2 to 3 months in between season.

At this point, I'm hoping that it even has one.

The seven-season thing is a relic of Berman-era Trek. Don't expect them to hold to this at all in the future.

Agreed - lets get past the first year and then we can hope for more. Seven in this day seems to be a stretch.

Fuller doesn't get a say in how many episodes they do per season.

How long it runs really depends on Netflix at this point, if they renew it CBS will keep making it. Even if it flops on All Access CBS, if Netflix wants it CBS will deliver.

The culture in non network television now seems to be gravitating towards having only as many seasons as it takes to tell the story, and keeping the quality high as a result.

How many seasons does Fuller that'll take?

Personally I'm hoping lots, as it's nice when a show hangs around a while, and you get to develop a proper bond with the characters.

He might see it differently though.

I expect 4 seasons followed by a new show - if it does well. If it doesn't do well we probably won't have more than a season or 2.

Agreed. 4 or 5 max ... If it goes beyond 5 I expect a major change in the status quo of the show, like Discovery is destroyed, and a new one will be launched, but mostly different crew and different mission

Why would you want them to destroy the ship or have a new crew? You may as well do a whole new series.

The seven-season thing is not built into stone. The original Twilight Zone only ran five seasons. The original Batman series only ran three. Heck, TOS was only on a "five-year mission" and only managed three . .. . unless you count TAS, I guess.

Babylon-5, Farscape, Battlestar Galactica, Warehouse 13 . . . none of them ran seven seasons, but The X-Files ran ten, not counting the recent revival. There's no rule that says that seven seasons is the designated length for genre shows.

At this point I've pretty much lost all interest and don't care if it survives the first season. Lack of news on premise, actors, cast, or even what the effing ship looks like now doesn't seem like a good sign.

If it gets good buzz, I'll tune in at that point. If not, I won't bother. I don't have time to invest myself in a non-starter.

I always thought the 7 season thing had something to do about Pay scales, royalties and benefits with the Actors Union?

It's been so long I can't even remember where I read that.

It will last seven years. Which, these days, is about three seasons. Of thirteen episodes each. Episode length of forty-five minutes. So, by 2024, we'll have about thirty hours of Discovery.
