So, you have no representative? No senator? No check? No balance?

US government is more broken than I realized if that is the case.
They're all Republicans. I'll be lucky if I can use a public restroom over the next four years without it being a major court battle. Which will be a lost cause if Trump stacks the Supreme Court with Conservatives.

The government isn't broken, it's just controlled by bigots and half the country is happy about it. I have to sit around and see how many people think that I don't deserve equal rights.

...if Trump stacks the Supreme Court with Conservatives
Part of this election was electing a president who would determine the makeup of the Supreme Court for the next 20 years. The reality is that a strict constitutionalist will be selected to fill Justice Scalia's former seat, and most likely Justice Ginsburg's as well given her intentions of retiring.

Yes, this election will be used to argue for the dismantling of the electoral college.

I look forward to that discussion, as it usually comes up after an election.

That's why I'm upset. This heavily affects my life and my future. No one is actively trying to deny your rights or treat your identity as a mental illness.

But we have a system whereby the presidency is determined by the electoral collage. I wish no one ill will, but there is a reality here.
I know how the system works don't be so condescending. Just don't pretend this is the will of the people because it isn't.

I've been reading the vitriol elsewhere (and some here) against anyone who voted for Mr. Trump*. Most of it is based on skin color and gender. And it all seems to be OK. IDIC - unless you're a white guy.

Why would someone vote for the side that thinks you're "deplorable"? Some have said that it's the same thing one side has always done to the other side and now the shoe is on the other foot. That's terrible on its own. But then it just becomes which side has more numbers.

Of course this same "racist, sexist, homophobic" electorate recently elected a black man to the presidency TWICE. So they weren't a nation of deplorables eight and four years ago. (Even when most of the governorships were being filled with Republicans. Some of them non-white non-male.)

For the last eight years anytime I have disagreed with the President on the same things I have disagreed with many presidents on for thirty some years, I've been told it was because I'm racist. What the hell? (All the black men and women I admire politically aren't "really" black, of course.)

So much for moving us beyond race.

* I decided after eight years of hearing "Bush" as an epithet I would never call Mr. Obama anything but that, or the President. (I've been about 80% successful I think.) Even though Mr. Trump is an orange colored buffoon (at best) I'll continue that standard as best as I can.

America decided it would rather elect a hateful bigot and likely rapist than a woman.

We have made our bed.
There, there, Cindy. It'll be okay, kid.
Robert's claims in that post can be backed up by clear evidence from Trump's own words. Your post, on the other hand, has zero factual basis, and is purely for insulting him. I'm also curious why you think calling someone by a woman's name is supposed to be considered an insult along the same lines of calling them childish?

Given the heated nature of the discussion and the relatively minor insult I'll let this one go with a verbal warning, but don't do it again. And that goes for people throughout the thread in general, which I am currently reviewing (this was notified on, which is why I'm handling it first). I get that people are upset about the outcome or conversely spiking the ball, but don't resort to insults.

Your stoic attitude toward this belies a selfishness and insensitivity to others. Awesome Possum is but one of the millions of people who will become targets of the legitimized bigotry and hate championed by Trump. To excuse it away as "Ehn, shit happens," with no empathy for how someone's life is about to change for the worse, is at the very least offensive.

I was thinking about this while driving to work this morning. My life, and that of my family's, probably won't be significantly affected by the next four years. It seems easy to shrug it aside and treat this as some bizarre experiment in civics. But there are a LOT of people who WILL be affected, people who over the last eight years saw barriers falling, and true hope and inclusivity rising. That will come to a stark end, motivated by darkness and hatred.

And by the way, the electoral college has not yet determined who gets the Presidency. Technically that happens on December 19th. And perhaps there's still time for action:

I'd just point out that Clinton didn't even say all of Trump's supporters are "deplorables," just some (about half).

Now, if you heard that comment and thought she was talking about you, well... ask yourself why. Because she didn't actually say, "all Trump supporters are deplorable."

The U,S, Constitution has an apparatus for amendment. We used to not directly elect our senators and that changed.

I don't think that amendment would be very popular outside of California and New York of course. It was designed so that the populous states wouldn't be able to ignore the less populous ones or tell them what to do.
