My Problem With.....

Spock's Barber

Rear Admiral
Rear Admiral
I like most of the props, sets, special effects, ships, stories, characters, etc. in TOS. However, every once in a while there appears something in an episode that just makes me scratch my head and say, "What is up with that?"

I'll start off....in "The Corbomite Maneuver", that big glowing disco nightclub glitter ball that Balok drives around just makes me laugh.

The overhead monitors on the Enterprise bridge that don't actually do anything, and which weren't MADE to do anything when TOS was remastered. I have a problem with those.

Penis rock.

Fly paper.

Dipping little girls curls in inkwells.

The imposter had some interesting qualities, wouldn't you say, yeoman?

Sulu asleep during the briefing in Corbomite Maneuver.

. . . Fly paper.

Dipping little girls curls in inkwells.
Flypaper is seldom used today -- I doubt many people still used it in 1966 -- but as a metaphor, it could still be a part of the language 200 years from now. After all, we use plenty of expressions today that have lost their literal meaning -- "hold your horses," "flash in the pan" and so on.

But yeah, that line from "Squire of Gothos" about "dipping little girls' curls in inkwells" seemed out of place. Inkwells? :wtf:

Just watched "And the Children Shall Lead" earlier tonight. (Ughhh)
They used one of those overhead bridge monitors to play back Dr Starnes' video log reports I would like to know how a tricorder got that overhead shot of the dead bodies.

I take the inkwells comment as being an early indicator of Kirk's fondness for antiques.
Yes, I think Kirk wasn't being literal here, but playing on the traditional understanding of boys playing pranks on girls, and he used this as a 'poetic' example...rather like his march to drumbeat line in 'This Side of Paradise'.

They still presumably have authors in the 23rd century - Kirk was probably making a literary reference to a children's story that has not been written yet. Maybe Roald Dahl's descendants like ink Wells.

How dare you, sir! I am proud of my ship!

In all seriousness though...
While I adore TOS, shoddy effects and all, the one that took me out of the experience was the couple of episodes when the set guys did a poor job of laying the bridge screens down flat, so you can see the crinkles in the paper. That's like seeing the card in the magician's sleeve.

It's funny, because I was thinking about submitting...Balok's decoy (from the episode, not the poster). It's pretty meta that the fake-looking puppet is really a puppet in the story...though I assume it's not supposed to be as fake-looking in-universe.

When face to face with "the Other," we realize how artificial and exaggerated our fear was.

I still think my swaying aquatic filter was a pretty good ruse. Fooled the flagship of Starfleet, suckers!

???!!!!

One of the best and most alarming Trek images ever. That's a good example candidate for best Trek moment ever. Develop a sense of awe... Of course that's diminished if you see it Remastered. The sphere is undermined by a larger Enterprise, and nitpicky extra detail.

...but, but, but.....an advanced alien like Balok drives an interstellar golf ball around the quadrants?!?!?

Can't say I've noticed. Where does this happen?
