Happy 30th anniversary ST IV The Voyage Home

HarryCanyon1982

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Can you believe it's been 30 years since one of the best ST adventures and sci-fi films ever hit the big screen.

I was 4 years old in St Louis when i saw this and American Tail the same day in theaters and saw this twice plus American Tail 4 times, both became faves and i had a crush on Katherine HIcks as she was lovely in this movie.

Not to mention this was one of the things that made me a ST fan besides seeing 2 on HBO with TAS on Nickelodeon.

No, I can't believe it's been 30 years since that movie came out. I was 16 years old and remember that time well. My mom, my brother and I went to see it the day after Thanksgiving 1986.

I feel old now....

Apparently, TVH was Leonard Nimoy's favourite entry of the franchise. But this film has not aged well, in the past three decades. It's a bit flat ...

It's funny, entertaining film for sure. In terms of it dating I would say it's the visual effects that date it more than anything, the crew does travel back to 1986, so the film looks right in terms of the fact that it was made in... 1986.

There's a few TOS Trek films that I just can't rank it above though - TMP, TWOK, TSFS, and TUC. Damn, have I just ranked it as the second worse TOS movie? I think I have. It's still a really good fun romp, and light years ahead of TFF though.

This was the first ST movie I saw in the cinema, so its in my top three right after Galaxy Quest

Improved budget, larger cast, bigger scope, well made, hitting on all cylinders -- but it's a comedy and it's just the perfunctory conclusion of "the trilogy" resetting the franchise back to square one.
After this it was just squeezing out as many more trips to the well with the aging cast.

Still wish they had forged ahead with steadily introducing new crew members and letting the older cast be mentors.

Yup

It's richer seen as part of the arc of course. To let off steam after the other two tense films. It's not so good as a stand alone perhaps. But it works well enough given the whole "Savin' the whales" plot there's a big risk that it gets too syrupy. Spock on a couple of occasions remonstrates against man's recklessness but it's not overdone.

Still my second-favorite TREK movie, after KHAN, of course. Leaves me grinning every time.

And, yes, hard to believe it's been thirty years. I was a few years out of college at that point, draining blood from winos to pay the bills while doing the the starving the writer thing. I remember standing in line in the Seattle drizzle along with what seemed like most of local fan community, all of us eager to see the new movie. I started calling it "Sidewalk Con" because we were having such a great time hanging out and socializing while waiting to be let into the theater . . ..

Yes! I just can't imagine its already 30years!
But it is still really 'hot' now! I also can see many figures in HOT TOYS.
But actually I know this movie because of my husband! this is his favourite movie:rommie:

The movie is on British T.V right now on SciFi channel, right now its a Star Trek TOS movie fest these days for ST I - VI :)

I think a big part of TVH fandom is whether you were alive and old enough to be part of pop culture when it was made. Most comedies are like that. With a few exceptions they are such a product of their time that later generations don't find them funny.

Since I was 2 when TVH came out I never thought it was anything special, and the jokes fall flat. It's fine, and I can appreciate it was doing something to avoid the franchise becoming, well, the sci fi action film series that it eventually became anyway, but it is nothing special for me.

It was my absolute favourite when I was younger, but I think I grew out of it a little. I still enjoy watching it, but I'd rather watch TWOK, FC, TUC or maybe even TSFS over it.
