Borg nanoprobes rewrite DNA?

Vandervecken

I just heard Bev Crusher say that in BOBW p2. So--removing implants reverses all that? DNA just snaps back to normal without some directed intervention? I don't buy it.

I always got the feeling that simple removal of the implants is supposed to eventually reverse the process, coupled with ST 24th century medical care--but down to the DNA level? The nanoprobes would not function in that direction--they have no reason to and would never have been designed to, so they won't simply reverse. They'll stop no doubt without the Collective signal, but reverse? Doubtful.

DNA requires precise lock-and-key enzymatic intervention to replicate and to transcript to mRNA. Neither damage to DNA nor its protein-making results are going to reverse without direct, active intervention of some kind, whether it's complex enzymatic manipulation or some sort of mimicry of that effect through EM waves or micromachines.

Do we assume Crusher tailored transductor viruses to reverse the damage? She has made transductors--but can she recreate a specific person's genome when she can't even cure a cold that way without disaster? (Genesis). Of course the magical transporter can heal it all, can't it? But they never mention that, or viral transductors.

I wish I hadn't re-heard that. Rewritten DNA isn't just going to go back to what it was. Normal old age alone is damage our DNA repair systems can't cope with. Borg nanoprobe fuckery? We'd be dead, probably, in any intermediate state.

Oh, and too bad we didn't get more Commander Shelby. I liked her, loved how she and Frakes sparred--that was well done, very good acting from both of them--and, well, thought she was hot in a very classical sort of way. Those exquisite cheek bones! Castle maiden and shieldmaiden combined.

She should have been back for DS9 a couple of times at least. Oh well.

Of course time moves on, but she's only 3 years older than I am, so Elisabeth if you're there, how about a drink or two sometime? I love this recent pic:

Given that they've cured cancer, as well as countless diseases, some of which explicitly change DNA (glow-in-the-dark Geordie), others likely would (DNA changes due to viral infections are thought to be a major cause of cancer in real life) restoring Picard's original genes would have to be a trivial (or at least not unheard of) treatment.

How do they do they actually fix DNA damage? Depends on the episode. They've used hyposprays, surgery, even the transporter to fix issues. It is clear that they can manipulate DNA in a number of ways.

Does this have wider implications? Can they apply these techniques to cure aging, or at least hold it off? Not clear. No one says how long humans can live in the 24th century. McCoy was 137 during Encounter at Farpoint and was at least marginally able to walk. Is that atypical? Has McCoy passed since Farpoint? It's never said.

Picard would always have a bit of Borg in him. Remember that in First Contact, he could still hear the voices of the Collective.

I was about to say this too. I don't think the Borg part 100% goes away for anyone, even someone like Picard who wasn't turned to a normal drone like everyone else.

Also, in Enterprise, Phlox was able to counteract the nanoprobes' effect, although I don't quite remember the specifics behind it. Though some of it had to do with him being Denobulan, I believe; he wasn't able to save others.

I have to wonder how much Borg-ness Janeway, Torres, and Tuvok retained, as the Doctor was able to remove "most", but not all of the Borg technology from them. They would no doubt always be able to hear the voices, but what else did they retain that couldn't be seen under their uniforms. Would they have had to use a regeneration alcove for awhile?

And I wonder if the nanoprobes still in B'Elanna's system affected her pregnancy soon to follow? Does Miral have nanoprobes in HER system?

They were vulnerable to radiation that would be fatal to most races, but not Phlox. I tend to wonder if he's able to survive it because of the genetic engineering his people engaged in -without creating psychotic supersoldier wannabe world leaders- centuries before.

Yeah, that was it. I wouldn't be surprised if it was due to the genetic engineering.
