Why no Obi-Wan movie??

So far we have episode 7 with original cast members
Well, they can't really have any prequel characters, since all the main characters from the prequels are dead by the time of TFA. In fact, most were dead by the end ROTS.

Early plans for Rey's Force Vision were going to include Hayden Christensen, and indeed this was even storyboarded. While this was obviously dropped before filming even began, I doubt it was because of instructions from Disney to ignore the Prequels.

^I'm pretty sure the only characters from the prequels that we know are still alive are Luke, Leia and Chewie and they were all present in TFA. "Ignoring the prequels" my foot! ;)

Incidentally, they actually just released a clip of JJA's commentary for the new BluRay where he talks about the force vision. Apparently there were a *lot* of iterations and concepts thrown around before they landed on the final product. What they went for in the end is to make it less literal and more of a confusing and subjective ordeal for Rey.

Obi-wan the TRUE hero of the prequel trilogy, not that dickweed Anakin!

Jar Jar was clearly alive. He can come back.

Yeah, Any suggestion that they're "steering clear" of anything connected with the prequels is simply not accurate. They had a whole panel dedicated to Ahsoka at celebration, have just published a book about her, there's prequel callbacks all throughout 'Rebels' AND Saw Gurerra is playing a prominent part of 'Rogue One'. Hell, the very next episode of Rebels looks to be nothing but Prequel callbacks!
Ahsoka is not from the prequel trilogy. She is associated with the prequel era but Gurerra and Ashoka, Rebels and Clone Wars are not the Prequel movies. They don't have the attention of main stream audiences and they are generally better received than the prequels.

Well, I walked into that one, I guess.

Actually, it's funny how open-ended Jar Jar's fate has always been. Even Legends never addressed what happened to him after the Prequel trilogy.

Whoa, here's a thought I just had: Jar Jar is Snoke!

I would assume Jar Jar Binks is either still the Representative of the Gungans in the Senate, or a Senator from Naboo (taking Padme's place), assuming he represents the sector and not just the planet. Or he has retired after however long he was in office. Outcast, General, Repesentative of his people to the galaxy, and hero during the Clone Wars if I remember correctly. He might be counted as one of Palpatine's supporters, or be a member of the Petition of the 2000 that wanted Palpatine to give up his extra powers following the end of the war (and possibly charged with treason). He could have been one of those that supports the Rebels from the shadows. He could be anywhere really.

Don't tempt fate! ;)

They're all prequel era characters, which is what some are proposing Disney is deliberately avoiding even mentioning or making eye contact with.

But OK, if you want to artificially restrict this the three movies alone and not anything inexorably tied to them, what *exactly* do you think they could have done in TFA to reference the prequel movies but so clearly and deliberately did not?

The First Order straight up talked about potentially creating a clone army, that's a pretty damn strong prequel reference.

Snoke is Obi Wan. Thats's not a hologram, it's a force projection a la ROTJ.

Its official.

Mickey Mouse told me.

As mentioned previously, there was a pretty damn good novel about his first few months on Tatooine that sadly came out right before the EU cut-off. I think there were also some comics here and there, though nothing you'd really want to build a film around. As much as I did enjoy the novel, I'd have a hard time seeing them turn something like that into an exciting holiday movie. Not unless they're really willing to stretch the kind of genres they're willing to tackle with these "Star Wars Stories".

There is however an ongoing canon storyline in the current ongoing Marvel comic that depicts excepts from his diary, though it's mostly set much later when Luke is about 9 or 10 years old. So far he seems to have been planet bound the whole time. The recent Ahsoka novel also has a very brief scene that features him communing with Qui Gon on Tatooine (presumably about a year after RotS.)
I can't remember the name of it, but there was an either YA or Middle Grade Legends series about another surviving Jedi and I think in at least a couple of the books the main character teams up with Obi-Wan off of Tattooine.

Yes, it's so easy to root for the one who projects an ideal image and at the same time, ignore his flaws and mistakes.

By the way, if Disney and Lucas can make a stand alone film set right before "A New Hope", then they can do a stand alone Obi-Wan film.

I wonder if it's possible to make an Obi-Wan movie with a teenage Obi-Wan? Was Qui-Gon's Obi-Wan's only master or was Yoda his master originally? I know Yoda could have taught Obi-Wan stuff at the Jedi Temple like the other younglings, but what about out in the field?

According to Clone Wars, every Jedi has been Yoda's apprentice at some point. Indeed, in AOTC we do see Yoda teaching a group of younglings. Though, I would presume by Obi-Wan's teenage years he was working with Qui-Gon full time.

Yeah, I suspected it was something like that. Padawans probably do only have one full time master ever during their learner years.

What i'm really talking about here is why we aren't all talking about an upcoming Obi Wan movie right now and why there isn't even a mention of it. We have Rogue One, Han Solo and rumors of Yoda and a Boba Fett movie, but to me the easiest one of these ideas to get made into a movie is Obi Wan, the actor is already there but it seems that while he is interested in it he hasn't heard anything from Disney. Of course he might not be allowed to say anything, but still, why aren't we seeing an Obi Wan movie sooner? My thoughts are because we last saw Obi Wan in the prequels and they aren't so fondly remembered. Heck, I even remember reading a rumor that Disney's Ultimate plan was to remake them in the distant future.

As for TFA. There is no heavy reference to the prequels, even TFA comes off as a remake of sorts of ANH. The very making of TFA avoids all the green screens and CGI effects that the prequels were filled with. We see C3PO and R2D2 again and all minor background original Trilogy characters yet there seems little love for prequels in TFA. Which is fine with me.

The First Order straight up talked about potentially creating a clone army, that's a pretty damn strong prequel reference.
Clones Wars were first mentioned in ANH though :p

Well you can just discard the Fett/Yoda rumours straight off the bat, because being rumours, they're almost certainly just reciprocating fan speculation. Indeed, you can just disregard rumours in general because 99% of the time they're proven to be a complete load of bollocks.
They're not officially talking about Fett, Yoda or Obi-Wan movies for the very same reason they're not talking about a Revan, Ahsoka or Rogue Squadron movie: because they haven't cemented their plans that far ahead yet.
They're not Marvel and they're not putting out three movies plus three or four seasons of television a year. They still have four more movies to release, two of which most certainly haven't even been written yet. I'm sure they're talking about it. Kicking several ideas around. Maybe even have the next two of three movies after EpIX pencilled in but it'd be *nuts* to announce anything yet.

So again, the reason they're not talking about it is because right now *there's nothing to talk about*. It's not some arc directive from the great corporate overlords on high to specifically *not* make eye contact with prequel fans.

There weren't any Prequel references because the Prequels were almost 50 or 60 years ago by the time we reach TFA, and they really had no relevance to the story at hand. I don't even remember there were even any direct references to specific events in the OT.
We're already getting two of the Prequels' supporting actors in Rogue One, so I don't see why they would have a problem bringing back one of their most popular cast members.
