At least Tuvok was an official member of starfleet, not on starfleet's most wanted list like Chak.

Annnnnd... Captain Cavit, or Doctor Captain Fitzgerald.

Actually Doctor Captain Fitzgerald would have been an interesting dynamic in an alternate leading cast selection.

He's always on the bridge, so you'd still need the EMH, but since Fitzgerald is a Doctor, he's always arguing with the EMH, and they can't call the Doctor the Doctor, because Doctor Captain is always asking "Are you talking to me or the light bulb?"

Meanwhile as far as the command decisions go, Chakotay would have had needed bigger balls as a warrior because his commanding officer was a healer and not so inclined to blow shit up unlike the terrorist scum sitting beside him.

I am not quite following you. Are you referring to books? I guess if you call a hologram a light bulb, then having sex with one could be called screw a light bulb...

Nearly a third of Voyager's crew died on the trip to Caretaker's Array in the pilot.

Lt. Commander Cavit was the original first officer who died in the pilot.

Doctor Lt. Fitzgerald was the original Doctor who died in the pilot.

I guess if they had kept the original doctor there would be no reason to even use the EMH other than when the Doctor would be incapacitated or in case of a triage situation where dozens of people are wounded.

And if the Vulcan Nurse still died?

Imagine the recriminations from our nominally arrogant EMH at being relegated to nursing duties?

    CONSPIRACY THEORY!

Vulcan Nurse is a Changeling spy who only pretended to die in Caretaker for some off reason!

Maybe I'm wrong, but if Janeway had come to die during a mission or further to a disease, Tuvok, as the Chief of Security (and Chief Tactical of Voyager, Tuvok isn't supposed to know all codes, even emergency ones? Plus, while Tuvok is an official member and a senior officer of Starfleet while Chakotay's rank and function are temporary, I guess that the question of the legitimacy of Chak could be questioned at one point or another, especially if his actions go to total contradictions with Starfleet's principles like the Prime Directive -> for Janeway & Tuvok, the art and the way seemed as important as the result - even if sometimes, they tended to forget this concept when it arranged them! -, while for Chakotay, only the latter counts. This was the way he had to think when he was in the Maquis, this is the way he would continue to act.

For my part, I think that Tuvok would have the legitimacy to become the new capitain of Voyager, with Chakotay continuing to serve as a (tempary) First Officer. So, an official member of starfleet replaces an other one at the head of the vessel! :techman:

A new Captain would be given a big ass rulebook it would take years to read form cover to cover, with no clue which was the important part to read first, if there was not another Captain to point out the juicy bits.

Captain Chakotay in Before and After got his ship through the Krenimum Imperium fine, meanwhile I saw Janeway die twice trying.

What we really needed to wonder is who was Captain Tuvok's first officer in resolutions, because it should have been have been Tom according to the chain of command, yet political expediency would still need a Maquis in, at least, the XO position... Which is B'Elanna.

I think it's possible that Kes was Tuvok's first officer, if you see how he took her counsel, when Tuvok's instinct in dealing with Kim was to cut a punk.
