In some ways, politics has gotten less civil in the US over the course of my lifetime. Vulgarity and spin-doctoring becoming a more highly refined "art" are two obvious ways in which it has. However, in others---keep in mind that my lifetime includes a sitting President resigning in disgrace to avoid conviction of high crimes and misdemeanors because he was in fact guilty---in other ways, it's really never reached that bottom since, despite dipping down towards it twice (Iran-Contra & Monicagate).

edit - Actually, Iran-Contra was worse than I indicated. It was better than Watergate in that Reagan didn't resign, but it was a case of the Administration breaking the law in numerous immoral ways that left blood on the US's hands. That's not something that can be said of Monicagate, but it's something in common with Watergate if you factor in the implications involving the Vietnam War.

Wasn't Jefferson vulgar and backstabbing when he ran?

if and when trump loses, even the people that voted for him will suddenly realize what an embarrassment he's been. It's like when people wake up after a night of drinking and see all the stupid things they've done while drunk..

I wonder if they'll come out with a special edition of Home Alone 2, with that scene with Trump deleted.

You are vastly overestimating Trump supporters' capacity for self reflection.

I am just anticipating from past experience. I've lost count of all the hot candidates that were quickly forgotten after the election went another way.

The anger of the alt-right isn't going to evaporate once Trump is gone, I can guarantee you that.

But with any luck, they'll not have the numbers or clout to control the midterms or the 2020 GOP primary.

I am not sure all of them would be angry. Some of them may actually be relieved after they realize the bullet we've dodged.

They may be relieved that Trump isn't president, but they won't be happy about Hillary being president.

What are you basing that on? These are people who only become more angry, not less.

How many candidates do you know that continued campaigning after the election was other? No to mention the media who won't give a shit about trump's declarations anymore.

Who said anything about Trump continuing to campaign? I'm saying the alt-right is here to stay and is not going to be discouraged just because Trump lost.

They may not be discouraged but without trump there won't be anybody left to focalize their anger. It will be like a myopic guy losing his glasses.
