The GOP can replace a vacated position due to death, declination (decline or resign), or "otherwise," but cannot initiate the process. Trump would have to quit, and the "otherwise" would require a such a long legal process to determine what "otherwise" could possibly mean, that there is no time to explore such a precedent before the election itself. And they run the real risk of damaging themselves through such a cavalier bypass of the democratic process when a party can so easily replace a candidate put there by The People. History has shown the danger of convenience and expediency for one party when it later comes back to bite them at the hands of the other; a nation of law is weakened by the attempt.

Josh Putnam, a University of Georgia lecturer and expert on the machinations of the parties said, "Let’s be clear here: The rule is intended to fill vacancies, not to lay the groundwork for a replacement."

Rule 9:

Exactly. Those rules were never put in place for a party to replace their nominee just because they finally figured out that said nominee can't win.

Looking at it practically... We're only four weeks from Election Day. How the heck do you select another nominee, get them filed in all states even though we're already past filing deadlines in most (if not all) states by now, update all the ballots, and figure out what to do about absentee ballots that have already been mailed and states where early voting has already started... all in four weeks?! And at what crazy expense? No, the Republicans will just have to live with what they created. A part of me is still terrified that Trump might win, but most of me is looking forward to watching him crash and burn.

Again, I didn't watch the debate. From what I heard though, Trump acted like an ass and a bully and was pretty horrible. I'll watch the highlights later tonight.

The tiny bit I did watch, though, had him saying that "General Patton and MacArthur would be spinning in their graves."

Of course Trump idolizes those two. Of course.

Patton was a very effective general, but he was an idiot. He was a "blunt instrument." A tool to get the job done. But if D-Day were up to him it never would've succeeded. And although I have to give him his due and say that his intervention was crucial in the Battle of the Bulge, he like Trump, mocked soldiers with PTSD and loved making a distinction between "strong" and "weak." He was an ass.

MacArthur was an effective general and pretty good military governor of occupied Japan, but the dumbass would've started WW3 if he had his way in Korea and used nuclear weapons and continued his advance (like Trump). Another blunt instrument with little understanding of geopolitics, and was rightly fired for it.

Sound familiar?

I watched the debate but missed the start. I tuned in from the middle onwards and came away feeling glad I am not in the USA because I really have no idea who I would vote for. I came away very undecided.

Seriously? Did you forget everything that he's said and done and been caught on tape saying prior to today's debate? You're undecided on the bigotry, sexism, tax evasion, sexual assault, warmongering, intimidation of reporters and threats of arresting your opponents? Maybe you should start writing things down on your arms like the guy in Memento.

NOOOOOOOOOOO I have not forgotten any of the shit Trump has done.

But even Hilary leaves me feeling a bit meh. I guessed if pushed I'd vote for Clinton but yeah no way in hell I'd vote for someone like Trump.

Okay, I watched one highlight tape. Oh good lord what a pompous ass that man is. And again with the strongman routine. He's like a cross between an African dictator and Mussolini, with the girth and smugness of Goering.

And Jesus Christ with the deflections. And his "You'd be in jail" applause line? "Oooooo! Sick burnnnnn!" How exactly would he accomplish that?

She's been investigated by the FBI. She's been questioned by Congress. So he's just going to throw her in jail? Is he trying out Stalin now, with a dash of Putin?

Yeah it's an applause line, it sounds good for like a half-second, but not if you actually think about it. And the sad thing is, most voters wouldn't think about it.

He did get in some good hits with foreign policy. Not because HE knows a damn thing about foreign policy, but because the only effective he has left is to tie her to Obama as the "creator of ISIS" and say "more of the same!" He did make her dance briefly. But what he offered in response was of NO SUBSTANCE.

He made himself look bad, and the party look bad. He looks and sounds, and I'm being completely serious about this, like a wannabe dictator. And if people actually want that, he's their man I guess. He's absolutely shameful.

Seems to be (at best) like choosing to eat either a dry old sandwich or a pile of dog puke.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals..."

OK that final question that was asked for both parties. It was a good question but am I right in thinking Trump just didn't know whether to take the answer Hilary gave as a compliment or an insult?

I just took it that way and that he was being his usual manchild self about it.

"Say something complimentary about the other candidate."

*Clinton compliments Trump's children*

"I'm not sure whether to take that as a compliment."

Was he even mentally present last night, or was he too coked up to realize what was happening?

What about those women he got on camera to say Clinton raped them?

Wasn't that a bit libelous?

I didn't watch his event to see what they actually said. In any case, I don't think there were any new accusations, so it would've had to have been libel way back in the '90s and before (when these allegations first emerged).

I've done my best to ignore that, in any case, because it's Trump being a nasty, petulant brat, thinking that getting revenge on Bill Clinton is the best way to respond when confronted with his own shitty behavior.

Trump is getting too much for me. I mean, I'm still befuddled that he tried to show how corrupt Hillary Clinton was by telling people how he bribed her to attend his wedding. And he hasn't gotten smarter since.

Bribed her to attend Chelsea's wedding? That's hilarious! So how does he justify having invited the Clintons to attend his own (third) wedding?

What?! Where did you get that from?

No, during one of the early GOP primary debates, Trump said: "I gave to many people. With Hillary Clinton I said be at my wedding, and she came to my wedding. She had no choice because I gave."

Well, Donald, that absolutely was money well spent.

There's still a tiny little part of my soul that fears Trump somehow winning next month because, well, the American people are fickle as hell and many voters are just plain stupid, but after last night we are as close to a Hillary Clinton Presidency as we've ever been and this country will be better off for it should she indeed win. Seriously, how anybody with a basic core of decency or an IQ higher than their shoe size can vote for Donald Trump after that shitfest and his petty little tinpot dictator threat to put her in jail I will never understand and I don't want to.

I think political pundit The Waco Kid put it best
