The Prime Directive on this show

I am not sure I agree with you about "The Apple". For all intents and purposes the people were happy. I am guessing that once they find out that they are growing old and feeble and getting sick and forced to toil all day for food and some of then start dying, they won't be so happy.
Can't argue with that. However, life without struggle to grow .... .

Eve not taking a bite of the apple would've led to a special kind of Hell.
There's a point to consider. A "father" brings his "children" into a world, provides for them, BUT places rules about a certain "tree of knowledge" and says "now don't touch that!"
The "father" says follow me, but only become aware as much as I let you become aware.

Which is a terrible thing to do. It treats the children as possessions, instead of sapient beings able to make their own way.

Which is stupid when you stop to think about it. Why was there a tree of knowledge to begin with? Religion is full of myths that are so idiotic that it's just unbelievable that they even exist.

"Prior contamination". An admission that the PD is important and that mistakes had to be corrected. TOS does quite a bit of this, though technically a breaking of the PD itself. I recall I saw somewhere that this IS allowed for in the PD, hence what we see in certain episodes.

Or STID when Kirk gets demoted for helping people not to go extinct.

As far as I know rescuing them wasn't the problem. I mean Spock, who really didn't want to break the prime directive, was totally fine with it, too. He went into the volcano with that cold bomb after all. The problem was only, that they were seen by the indigenous species. They even started unintentionally a new religion. If Kirk would have let Spock die and the Enterprise wouldn't have been seen, Kirk wouldn't have gotten demoted.

Either way I guess the long term future of the Nibirus might be something like in this short fanfic:

If they somehow remember the stories of their forefathers at all, most of the Nibirus likely won't truly believe them and think they are only old sagas, which aren't based on reality. And when they reached the point, that they know for sure, that alien life exists and maybe even meet humans, they are advanced enough to handle the truth.

I don't need fanfic to tell me what I already know.

I wasn't implying that you don't have a view of the potential future of the Nibirus. I was just voicing my personal opinion about it. You know, have some exchange of opinions, which is kind of the function of a fan forum. And others read my comment maybe, too, and enjoy that little fanfic like I did.

Ok, sorry. I thought you were.

Fanfic very importantly tells you how unlikely genre characters might have come to #### if the real world producers didn't have a stick up their ass about keeping #### PG13.

The Janeway loves Harry Kim stuff is disturbing because he keeps calling her "mom" while they are doing it.

Yes, that is disturbing!

Yeah, agreed.

This is an oversimplification but as I see it, the Prime Directive is set in place to set a minimum standard of technology and social progression for the Federation to deal with a civilization as "equals," as well as setting a standard of ethics so that less advanced civilizations aren't contaminated by or taken advantage of by the federation. Any civilization who doesn't meet the minimum, has varying degrees of kid gloves that the federation handles them with, which could explain there seems some inconsistency. The anology I would make is you wouldn't treat a 3 year old the same as a 17 year old. For example with stone age civilizations, the federation can't reveal themselves, or they risk being worshiped as gods. Extreme care needs to be taken. However, the Iotians (gangster planet) are highly intelligent, and can grasp that the idea of interplanetary travel and who the federation is. They just don't have warp drive yet, and are still stuck at the 20th century level of society (by 23rd century standards is still primitive), so the biggest danger with them is acquiring federation tech and misusing it.

I have to disagree, at least slightly. Based on Pike's reaction it seemed that rescuing them was the problem, at least in the sense that if Pike were there, he would have ordered them not to try. You may be right in that the act of rescue itself is not necessarily a violation, but as long as the attempt automatically carries the risk of contamination, that doesn't seem to matter. Contamination is unacceptable, even if that means letting people die.

Yeah, agreed.

Again, an argument for "case-by-case" basis with thoughtful deliberation at the Federation Council level.
A lone starship on a mission is too unilateral for that kind of decision-making.
