Yeah, but since the Goodman book didn't exist when they did the first editions of the Encyclopedia, they obviously did some editing. But I guess they didn't want to do extensive revisions to their initial assumptions.

I'm sure that deadlines played a part in it, too. Obviously the emphasis is going to be on getting all the new stuff in there rather than revising the old entries. If nothing else, that'll be noticed a lot more.

It's not like, for instance, we have any startling new insights into Nomad that we didn't have the last time the encyclopedia was published.

I think the concern is more around text that should have been written, whether they saw the need or not. Ignoring a new data point since the last edition and continuing to place TMP in 2271 is a pretty good example of something that should have been updated.

It's a conspiracy. They now the Trek fans are very continuity obsessed and will notice when something differs from the official canon, so in order to drive us all insane they actively make decisions that contradict canon! Someone tell CBS! How did reality even got comissioned?!

I don't see any conflict. The prototype USS Universe exploded on its first flight, so it's unlikely that there was ever a Universe class in the 24th century.

Plus, Starfleet may reuse class names like it does for ship names. So far, we've got two Intrepid classes in TrekLit. And if you include additional sources, it gets pretty wild. I can think of three Ranger classes on top of my head.

Even if they do not charge the text of the old entries I would think they will update the quality of some of the pictures. The old screen captures in the previous books look so dated. Now they can go to the tv episodes and films with remastered Blu Rays for perfect captures.

I preordered my copy and it shipped today. WIth my employee discount it's only $83 with free shipping. It's estimated to arrive on Friday. I have been looking forward to this for years.

The prototype U.S.S. Universe in Serpents Among the Ruins was described as a small ship that looked nothing like the Enterprise-J. Plus, the Enterprise-J was from an alternate timeline in which the Sphere Builders expanded the Expanse from the 22nd century to the 26th, so it has no bearing on the Prime timeline.

Too bad they got the registry wrong on the Kelvin's plaque.

I have ordered it and glad I did but the exclusion of TAS is very dubious. It's left out because Gene did not considered it canon?! What about the complaints he had about the films that where made in his life time? Most of all if this book is only containing what Roddenberry approved, that should mean nothing produced since his death...

I think the Okudas are not including TAS simply because it's not part of their personal canon. I don't think their decision has anything to do with Gene Roddenberry.

I admit I never tend to pre-order things. I know Amazon will guarantee you the lowest price between the day you pre-order and release day. But... does it ever happen that they then lower it even further on the day after release, so that you're out of the guarantee period?

OK, so I had pre-ordered it at the $123 price. I got an email from Amazon.ca saying it will ship on October 26. So I go look today on release day... and they've upped the discount to a full 40%, which brings the price down to $112, and they list it as currently in stock.

So my understanding is that, because of the pre-order price guarantee, I'll be charged the $112 price when it eventually ships, which, admittedly is great, because it's less than what I was expecting. But I could have just gone there and placed an order today, and got that exact same price, and presumably since it's in stock they'd ship it right away, too, rather than having to wait a week like I am currently. So tell me again... what exactly is the benefit to pre-ordering? As I mentioned, I don't tend to do that, and in this case, I'm regretting having done so. I wouldn't have been any further behind to just order it on release day, and might have actually come out a bit ahead.

The benefit is that if the price dropped at some point after you pre-ordered but rose again before it shipped, you'd get the lowest price.

That is not what they are saying. They specifically say Gene did not consider TAS canon and that is why it's excluded. They said it in the previous editions and repeated it in a new interview on this new edition.
