Spoilers Star Trek Continues

I accidentally stumbled across this fan series when I went on YouTube the other day. I knew of fan films and series, but the few I've watched were hard to enjoy. I gave STC a shot and I'm in love.

For those who are into this series, let's talk about the episodes posted so far. I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts. I'm sure there's another thread on here for STC, but I got tired of digging for it and started a new one here.

This is a rich series that blends so well with the original one. Once I got past the new faces playing familiar roles (just as I had to with Kelvin Timeline Trek) I hardly notice a difference. The stories feel just like the original series in that they take cultural issues and play them out in the future. Episode 7 is a prime example.

The sets are fantastic. The models of the ships are stellar and lets face it, nothing beats having a Doohan in the role of Scotty just adds to it all.

In many ways, the fan productions are capturing the magic that the followup series' and movies haven't.

What are your thoughts? And feel free to add spoilers in this thread.

There is a sizable STC following here. It's hard to believe you couldn't find a thread discussing the latest episode because it's right near the top of this forum.

Sorry about that. Didn't mean to create a new thread. I wanted to discuss the entire series in general and all I saw listed were the individual episodes. I guess I earned my newbie badge this week.

I have been a fan from the onset. There is a lot I like about STC, but there are disappointments as well. Some are nitpicky while others not so much.

Part of what annoys me are the ever more frequent callouts to post TOS productions which are something that simply wouldn't have existed if TOS had continued to a fourth season. Those callouts couldn't have been there since those other productions would not exist for decades to come. That taints the sense of authenticity for me in terms of suspension of disbelief.

The writing is also hit-and-miss. That and a tendency to write TOS stories somewhat like TNG ones and treating the characters more like what was done in the later series.

Thankfully they have largely avoided too much technobabble.

That and a tendency to write TOS stories somewhat like TNG ones and treating the characters more like what was done in the later series.

Like adding a ship counselor? That was one of the more glaring additions I've seen. I don't recall a counselor on any ship until TNG. I'm also confused about Bones. Did they change actors in Episode 3? He looks different.

Yes, they did change actors for McCoy. Chuck Huber was originally supposed to play McCoy, but had a scheduling conflict so Larry Nemecek stepped in. Later Huber became available and returned.

Surprisingly it isn't McKennah's presence that bothers me. I happen to like her although I seriously doubt there would have been a Counselor in a fourth season of TOS.

I loved the show from the beginning. So much so that I contacted Vic to see if he'd allow me to write some original music for STC. So far, I've scored episodes 4,5,and 6, the three episodes you haven't seen yet. I was unable to do 7 because of scheduling issues but I shall return.

Yes that's my biggest complaint too. I would have rather seen one episode that had a major impact on Kirk and led him onto a more reflective path. Maybe that is the intention of "The White Iris" I don't know. I do know they have far less episodes to get to that then they would like.

Kirk is rarely Kirk in these fan productions. New Voyages suffers from the same hangup. He isn't driving a lot of the stories, nor is he making decisive and creative decisions like he did in TOS.

Agreed. I wonder why if it just happens because it's 50 years later since TOS or it's a conscious effort? At the end of Lolani I thought we were going to see that but alas no.

I keep thinking of all the other headlines of the late 60's and early 70's. -

What else was in the zeitgeist during production of a notional season ~ 4/5 ?

It certainly wasn't all Bra Burning, Bella Abzug, EST and Psychodrama-

In the US (and abroad), we experienced "tune in, drop out", the mistrust of the military, the beginnings of the environmental movement, (Rachel Carson's Silent Spring) , Vatican II, etc. Each of these (and more) are ripe for (retro)allegory. Any one or more of these tales could be told without retcon, forward/backward canon issues, anachronistic characters and so forth. Heck, at the time, even interest in NASA was winding down as the folks in urban centers became increasingly restless with spending that seemingly had no effect on their lives. Anyone who hasn't heard Gil Scott Heron's 1970 Piece about NASA on the Moon should. Now.

Given the fine acting skill of the leads, the visual production power (and fantastic original music!) of Continues- imagine what stories could still be told! Such a shame we have so few tales remaining.

I know the final scripts are finished- but both a little editing, and a more deft storytelling hand each can go a long way. What would a producer during 1970/71 actually have done if he/she had had the proper resources?

Four the last four eps- I would personally kickstart /patreon a seance with Gene Coon.

CBS can't possibly have an objection to that.
