Bought my first real Trek novels the other day

Except for 15 years ago when my mom bought a TNG novel for us to read together (which sadly didn't happen before she passed away), I've never really owned any Trek novels. Been meaning to pick up some for quite a long time, though (especially the work of Peter David, who I've greatly appreciated for his comic book work). Was in Nashville for a wedding this weekend, and my wife and I stumbled upon a used book store. They had a but load of Trek novels. I settled on Vulcan's Glory (Spock's first mission aboard the Enterprise as written by D.C. Fontana), Enterprise: The First Adventure (Kirk's first mission aboard the Enterprise as written by Vonda N. McIntyre), and Peter David's first New Frontier novel. Haven't been able to read any of them yet, but I'm very excited about all of them.

Just thought I'd share my new Trek venture. Will let you guys know what I think of the books as I read them.

I just recently read "Vulcan's Glory" and it was a pretty good book. Just remember that with glory, the characters are based on their appearance range in "The Cage".

I read Vulcan's Glory it when it was new, and thanks to the ravages of time, the only two things I remember about it were that I read it, and that I liked it.

Oh, and that it featured "The Cage" cast. Okay, I remember three things about it. See, there's the ravages of time again.

I also enjoyed ENTERPRISE THE FIRST ADVENTURE. I also got and read that when it was new, but remember it a little better because I've read it at least four times since 1986.

I hope you enjoy both. I did.

I read and enjoyed both Vulcan's Glory and Enterprise: TFA when they first came out. I recently reread Vulcan's Glory and found it holds up well for a book written in the 80s. I think Greg Cox drew some on it for characters in two recent books - Child of Two Worlds, set on the Enterprise during Pike's day, and Legacies I: Captain to Captain, featuring Number One during Kirk's captaincy, as well as a segment set on the Enterprise during April's captaincy.

I haven't read Enterprise: TFA in years, but I know I've read it more than once. I remember it being a good, entertaining story of Kirk and his crew coming together, but it mostly ignores the cast differences between "Where No Man has Gone Before" and the rest of the series, although both Gary Mitchell and Dr. Piper make appearances or at least get mentioned.

I've never read any of the New Frontier books since Peter David is not always to my taste, but I know there are many folks here who really like it. One of his books that I did think was really great was Q-in-Law which featured both Q and Lwaxana Troi and really capture the spirit of both those characters.

Enjoy your reading and I look forward to hearing what you think!

I'm having a Trek lit reading binge at the moment after years of not reading any, about 30 years! Currently frustrated as I'm waiting for my two most recent purchases to drop through the letterbox. It's true what they say, the waiting is the hardest part.

You've got a couple of good 'uns there imo - New Frontier #1 was superb(my only annoyance was how short it was!), and The First Adventure is a good book with a really interesting central concept.
(the worldship). I also think kirk probably takes too much abuse for what were for me reasonable positions about the circus, although it has been a bit a while so its a bit hazy. I'll be interested to see what you thought of how people treated him

Vulcan's Glory I remember as being fairly meh though

I hope the OP got the combined NF books 1-4 and not just book 1 on its own. The combined volume is an excellent story.

Unfortunately, I just got book one. They had the first four but they were all separate books and would've cost me an extra 9 or so dollars, which was more than I was willing to spend. Plus, I don't know if I'll even like the New Frontier series yet. So was probably best for me to play it safe under that situation.
