William Shatner Apologizes For Star Trek V

BTW, it must have taken some work to Picard to dig that grave, without any tools?
Yes, it's been pointed out that Picard would have had to drag Kirk's body to the top of the mountain, and then bring up enough rocks to cover it. A lot of work for an old man. No wonder Picard said "Eh, fuck it," when he saw the state of his ship. He just wanted to lie down already!

Why did he even bury him there? I thought they'd get Kirk's body back to Earth, out of respect.

Kirk presumably had a funeral with full honours on the occasion of his first "death", which might make doing it again seem redundant.

I guess you could also argue that covering up Kirk's later adventure would align with the dictates of the Temporal Prime Directive.

I don't agree. People usually treat the remains of their heroes with respect, regardless of how inconvenient it may be. It's a Christian thing, we worship relics.

Did Shatner let himself go after TMP because, even though he was still Leading Man material, he could never again be a Romantic Lead? I know he had a gut in TOS Season 3, but he was also going through a divorce and losing his show, so I accept that is the result of stress. When TMP came along, he was in a different "place" and his ship had just come in, so he's all actorish-looking, again, for that film.

Shatner got in tiptop shape for TMP (talks about it in one of his books), he was in good shape for II (think he looked the best in that out of all the films), in III the scenes shot first (Vulcan) he was in great TMP shape but other scenes noticeably weightier (remember reading comments from Bennett saying how shatner would crash diet before a Trek movie but as shooting progressed would pile on the pounds). IV looked good shape in Vulcan scenes (the shot where he looks up at Spock on Vasquez rocks) but the latter shot stuff (trial?) looked chunkier. But throughout V, VI, VII was quite 'cuddly' (remember reading around that time him being described as a 'cuddly leading man' - like you could imagine feeling all warm and protected if he were to give you a big cuddle lol)

For some as you age it's gets ever harder to stay trim. And Shatner's challenges is nothing compared to how fast Jonathan Frakes went to seed.

That's not an apology. The film stank not for a lack of FX but because of a bad script. I don't see how allocating more money to that dud would have made it any more palatable.

True dat. After the high points that were TWOK, TSFS and TVH, this was almost like watching a third season episode on the big screen.

There is no shot / camera movement even remotely as creative in those movies as the pan and track shot when everyone on the bridge is astonished by the appearance of "God" yet we slowly see that the Klingon Bird of Prey is approaching, and the minor cue of Goldsmith's Klingon theme plays.

If I may be so bold, regarding the aforementioned trackshot: I've always found that the purpose of this shot was - quite simply - an excuse to sustain coverage of Shatner's daughter, who's set up to be at the center of focus, practically the whole time.
