Not a Drill: SETI Is Investigating a Possible Extraterrestrial Signal From Deep Space

All alien stories are mistakes or a hoaxes until proven otherwise. So far, it's been 100% mistake or hoax. So, like the OPERA FTL nutrino experiment between CERN and LNGS, or the proof of cosmic inflation from the BICEP2 experiment, both not long ago, the first thing you look at is how they got it wrong. That's science. "Faith" in degrees isn't science.

I know about hoaxes. What I'm talking about is @locutus101's comment that the scientists could have perpetrated a hoax, rather than made a mistake. I explained that something like that was more akin to paranoia and conspiracy talk. That it was baseless speculation, which it is.

Forums have more amnesia than I even suspected. I linked to an NPR article just one page ago about the suspected terrestrial origin.

The first debunking article link made an appearance on page 3. I guess eyeballs glassed over upon reading ". . .snopes. . ."

My comment regarded your statement here:
I'm sure, but I'm also going to trust the people with degrees on this one as to why they don't have a 100% accuracy record.

Yep, well there you have it. Though a quick summary of the facts in the text of the post would have helped more than just a link. People are lazy.

It doesn't prevent you from being wrong, though.

I suspect it's a cock-up rather than a conspiracy. The military of any country don't like to give information away, however tangential and obscure, as to what they might be up to and might have tried to suppress publication for that reason. 11 GHz is in the X band used for satellite communication and synthetic aperture radar.

You mean that they are blundering fools.

Over excitable, perhaps. No matter how rational and level headed you believe yourself to be, the exciting prospect that you might be the first person to ever receive a communication from an alien civilisation might get the better of you. Not good for career prospects or peer credibility if you're wrong, of course...

According to this line of thinking, the Earth should have already been visited by extraterrestrial aliens. In an informal conversation, Fermi noted no convincing evidence of this, leading him to ask, "Where is everybody?"[9][10] There have been many attempts to explain the Fermi paradox,[11][12] primarily suggesting either that intelligent extraterrestrial life is extremely rare, or proposing reasons that such civilizations have not contacted or visited Earth.

So we shouldn't bother searching because they're not already here harvesting our organs, despoiling our womenfolk, or generally getting in the way wearing their loud clothes and being rude to waiters?

That's a very compelling argument.
Rationality is often compelling.

Nothing prevents me from being wrong. Nothing prevents anyone from being wrong, even Hawking has been wrong in his life. I'm not sure what you're going for here.

Probably. Of course, it could be like the beginning of The Arrival, where Zane was listening on a frequency he wasn't supposed to. We should probably call Charlie Sheen.
