Cold War spy fiction...

I'm quite obsessed with Cold War TV series. If anyone else is interested, and hasn't see them, please check these out:
Deutschland '83
Callan
The BBC adaptations of Tinker, Tailor and Smiley's People
Sleepers
And finally, and easily the best of them all, The Sandbaggers

I've never heard of Sleepers and I did see a little bit of Deutschland '83. As for the other four I've got them on DVD and love them. I've also got five of the Smiley novels with Tinker, Tailor by far my favourite. I may rewatch the BBC version of it soon having recently rewatched the film. A few years ago the BBC's Radio 4 drmatised all of Le Carre's Smiley Novels as The Complete Smiley and I've listened to them many times. I've also read several of the Tom Clancys', specifically the four turned into films as well as Red Storm Rising and Robert Littel's The Company which I also own on DVD. I was also a fan of The Game and I'm disappointed they're not making another series of it.

Le Carre's "The Looking Glass War" is an interesting story, showing how those on the front lines could be quite expendable. Smiley makes an appearance too. I like the BBC radio drama with Brian Cox. There was a movie in the late sixties with Anthony Hopkins, but it was dull as a Merchant Ivory production.

Yeah I've got the book, radio drama and the film. I wouldn't call the film version dull necessarily. I also noticed they excised Smiley from the film version. I've just finished watching episode two of Tinker Tailor, still very good.

I've been thinking of replacing my DVD set of the Tinker, Tailor series with blu ray. But since the show was filmed on 16mm, I don't know if that would make much difference in picture quality.

Mm, I didn't know it was out on blu ray. 16mm can look amazing, just check out Networks work on The Professionals, so I wouldn't worry about source. However, I would worry about whether it's an upscale rather than a new transfer if the BBC is involved.

My favorite cold war movie is Firefox.

That's one of my favorites too. Saw it in the theater when it first came out, it was pretty good by 1982 standards.

I liked Helen MacInnes and Alistair MacLean for espionage book authors. I read spy thrillers when I was younger, but I'm no longer interested in it as a genre. I liked Three Days of the Condor, but I don't really watch spy shows anymore.
