One thing that annoys me in Voyager...

bajorangirl

Lieutenant
Red Shirt
The word "compensate"!
'Theres a power fluctuation in the warp core... Compensate.'
'A fuel line has ruptured... attempting to compensate'
'I can't get a transporter lock... attempting to compensate'
'The plasma manifolds is becoming unstable... I can compensate for that!'
'Were losing speed... can you compensate?'

Don't get me wrong I love Voyager but they use this word quite a lot and it gets on my nerves.

One thing in Voyager that annoys me is that Chakotay's often not given enough to do. He's there. He's available. Work him, you know? Get him more involved ....
No surprise that Beltran was dissatisfied with how his character was treated.

Another thing I find ... well, "annoying" is too strong a word, but ... distracting, at times, is Mulgrew's mode of speech. She'll "whistle" certain consonants, like TR, or CH, especially - but there's one or two other combinations she does it for. Here, I'll give you an example:

CH- "Ch<whistle>akotay"
TR - "Tr<whistle>ust"

Sometimes, I think she does this on purpose, which is the worst of it. Now, I know, it's a small thing, and I know how everybody loves Kate, I'm just so glad that I've gotten this off of my chest, now.

LOL you're forgiven. I heard it with "ship" today.

Thank you, Catarina. I can only surmise that she does the consonant whistle as a way to catch the ear, when she's onstage, doing plays and things. Force of Habit, perhaps. We all need a schtick, however, do we not? To set us apart from the crowd ....

I have never noticed that! I'm due a rewatch of Voyager at some point soon so I'll keep an ear out.

What I wonder is, if Robert Beltran was so dissatisfied with the treatment of whom he said to be victim, after Jeri Taylor handled over her position of Executive Producer & showrunner to Brannon Braga from 1998 (what seemed to correspond to S4 and the arrival of Ryan), why not to have resigned? Or even better, not to renew his contract at the end of S5, like Terry Farrell in S6 of DS9 ?! I'm pretty sure that Piller/Berman/Braga would have been pleased to let him leave, especially after all the criticisms he has made towards the production.

In fact, I think that it is UPN which forced them to keep Beltran (the actor & his charcter being largely popular with female fans : the possibility of a romance J/C was still in the air). Like it intervene later with Jeri Ryan's Seven when Braga wanted to kill the character.

It's just a theory but maybe that, unable to fire him, the trio made sure to "weaken" his character... and the actor made no effort to remedy it. For my part, I find that in spite of his general wooden performance, Beltran (like Wang) was offered some pretty good episodes in 3 remaining seasons so, I trully don't understand his claim -> hey, his Character, Chakotay, even ended with Seven and was at the helm of Voyager for the return to Earth! ;)

Anyway, in the end, contrary to most of their colleagues, Beltran and Wang had - and still have - a hard time to have roles, since the end of ST:VOY! Karma?

To answer to the question, what annoyed me the most in VOY are :

- too much epsiodes with Kazons & Hirogens for me.
- why to have to relegate to minor roles, some characters like Lt Carey, Celes Tale and her firends...?
-> they were almost more interesting Harry Kim!

I'm not really a fan of Beltran. I think it was in poor taste for him to speak negatively of the show he was on. I've seen him say that he stopped reading scripts which to me seems very unprofessional. Whether or not you are unhappy with your job or not you should do it to the best of your ability. As long as he was on the show he should have been putting the effort into it. I don't always like my job but when I'm there I do my best, and I would never publicy say anything negative about my employer.

It annoys me that there weren't more Hirogen episodes.

It annoys the HELL out of me that there wasn't more Tuvok. I really liked Jeri Ryan, she was very good, but she did eclipse alot of characters and Tuvok was one. Great Vulcan, loved his sourpuss delivery and understated irony.

She also diminished Torres' role. Good thing they had the relationship with Tom so the character would have some purpose on the ship.

... the Kazon from the first two seasons. This scavenger race was as annoying as the early-TNG Ferengi (before Quark). They all looked like bad casting rejects from a Mad Max movie. They seemed too incompetent to run their own vessels, let alone capture Voyager.
Thankfully, that storyline went away!

Compensate is a fitting word though... what would you rather they used?
They could have used more of a variety or phrases instead of just using the word compensate.

The Kazon we're really annoying but it's funny you mention Mad Max I always thought the Hirogen were like something off there they also remind me of Bane from the Batman comics.

Ghislaine, you have some interesting theories. And a most complete understanding of interrelationships behind-the-scenes. However, I do not have any clue why Beltran felt the need to stick around, instead of just leaving the show. My guess is that being the Male Lead of a show with the kind of exposure STAR TREK has was valuable, to him. I certainly would consider it to be so, were I in his position. As well, who could be unaware of Denise Crosby's fate, who starred as Yar, in THE NEXT GENERATION? She was so beautiful, so sexy, from such a famous family ... how could she not set the world alight without having to cater to Trekkies? She found out, didn't she?

Then, to make matters worse, she makes the unsolicited offer to guest star on TNG episodes as another character - just to get exposure! Look, I love Denise, but it was a textbook example of what not to do, when you're on a successful television series - and Beltran, no doubt, took note. And unlike Denise, Robert was not 20something when he starred in STAR TREK.

What awaited him, outside of VOYAGER's Comfort Zone? Guest-starring roles playing The Dad on a variety of 2nd rate programming? On one hand, yes, we get it ... VOYAGER was jerking him around and what control did he have over it? Day In & Day Out having to be at a job he hated, like he was the rest of us ... a simple commoner! On the other hand ... you have to play The Game, if you want a career in showbiz. But everybody involved - not just Beltran - should've made a greater effort to make the best of the situation, for the sake of a cordial atmosphere and a superior product that didn't have to sell itself on hype, alone.

The Kazons annoyed the hell out of me. I was relieved when we were rid of them after basics. Although they did come back briefly in Shattered. It's weird though that they passed on the opportunity to put Kes in that episode (since it was mostly about things of the past).
