Okay, jokes aside, I honestly don't think there were many choices that would have worked or stuck nearly as well as STTNG did. I think "Star Trek Continues" might have worked for TNG.

Frankly, I've never watched that show, more than a few seconds that is. I just couldn't stomach it.
I don't get why TNG is often accused of being really preachy (sure it occasionally was as was the original series and most TV series), let alone holier-than-thou but the original series generally is considered to have not been. The differences between the two are not that vast.

When Patrick Stewart was on Saturday Night Live, they did a Love Boat: The Next Generation skit. It was pretty funny, although I can't remember now who on the cast plays who. This would have been early to mid-90s I believe.
That makes sense since it was about the time when the show ended. I remember the skit about cheers. it was around that time too.
Had the goodwill during Season 1 not been there...
