Yes, although he always wore the insignia of a full commander. For that matter, wasn't it stated Spock was only a Lt.Cmdr early on? Like when the computer states service records in Menagerie or Court Martial or something?

Perhaps in a sense, but I have a feeling the general arc of the show (from the main protagonists standpoint) will be how she rises through the ranks.
From my experience in the Navy, the higher up you are, the less you're affecting day to day things directly. Unlike what Trek has depicted, the majority of people on the bridge of a Navy vessel or Operations will be enlisted watchstanders, the majority of whom are E-6 and below. You won't have officers so much as sweep outside in the passageways, let alone 99.9 percent of what Trek officers do.I really HOPE it will be like Lower Decks! A great episode and a wonderful premise for a whole show. I have thought so for years. I'm sure the Captain and senior staff will play a somewhat more central role, but having a subordinate as the focus is a brilliant idea to do something new with Star Trek. I'm looking forward to it.
I actually would not mind a series with that kind of an progression. Shorter more tight seasons and proper story arcs.Sound a bit like "House of Cards".
The first season chronicles her rise from science officer to XO. In the second season we'll see how she became the captain.![]()
Me neither. I hope for once the eventual finale of Discovery doesn't have every character in the same rank and job they started in with little significant change (Harry Kim syndrome). Modern TV accepts and indeed expects much more radical character arcs.I actually would not mind a series with that kind of an progression. Shorter more tight seasons and proper story arcs.
If they make the show like a realistic military career of a Lt. Cmd., then she'll have advanced a rank after a few seasons. And probably be on a different ship.
The third season will depict her courts marial, and reduction to basic crewperson third class. For the rest of the series run we'll occasionally see her in the background of scenes. The first season chronicles her rise from science officer to XO. Except for LaForge who advanced in rank too fast.I was in the AF during the TNG and DS9 airings, and was perplexed that progression in rank seemed to never happen.
Unless she pulls a Riker (or does Riker pull a her, technically?) and refuses to leave.
