While it is hard to see on the pictures the Nef Frontier spine art next to each other looks (in theory) like this:

I haven't got Prometheus #2 yet, however I haven't even read #1. Or The Fall #5 I am currently finishing book one of Greg's Khan duology(/trilogy).

 

The German books look thicker than the English versions. It looks like they have the same footprint, so it's not that they're smaller in the other dimensions. Is the print larger? Are German words longer on average and it adds up over the length of a novel?

 

A German reviewer had a pretty impressive picture regarding size differences between the English and German versions of Crucible: McCoy in her review:

The german paper is a lot thicker than the english. The Eternal Tide has ~380 pages, "Ewige Gezeiten" ~520, despite TET being only half as wide.

Any idea why somebody's shoulder is cut off on the far right? Is there another character who the missed there?

I only know about 500 German words, so it was very fun to go through the sample chapter of this and Po k out the words I knew! I think my new favorite word is Milchstraße, which I picked up from context clues.

 

Not really, the books are sturdy and as such can survive a lot. I mean we managed with the HP paperbacks too. Havent got those here for reference, but they are quite massive too.

 

Finally finished it. A full fledged review is probably coming in the near future, but here's a short mini review:

In the end I voted average, but in contrast to what I feared in the beginning, in the end it was closer to above average than below average.

After the IMO rather rough start writing wise the prose improved and actually was the stronger part in my opinion, while the character work definitely has more than enough room to improve, as it remains somewhat superficial for many characters and I still haven't figured out if Alexander's involvement is just stunt casting, or if he will play a significant role later. As it is I don't see why his role couldn't have been played by someone else, as he didn't even appear much in the second half of the novel.

 

So, finally finished the first book (and immediately went and bought the second one). I like it very much, and looking forward to the other two (well, the second one, I'll start tomorrow).

Two things, one thing I don't like is the constant name-dropping and cameos, like the short appearances of Quark, O'Brien, Ezri Dax and even the message from James Kirk in the prologue, which to me just are small-universe-syndrome, but I do realize that other people like these things, and it didn't really detract from the actual story. This being a 50th anniversary thing also helps me tolerate it.

The other thing is, I'm sure I'm not the only reader to do this, but when I read a novel, I often cast certain actors as characters in my head, just to have a face for them. So, in my head, Captain Adams is portrayed by Pierce Brosnan.

 

I went with Morgen Freeman for some reason.

 

That's funny, because the first thing I do while developing a character for a novel is browsing through the internet to look for an actor or actress (alive or dead) who could play the character. This helps me find a voice for the character during the first chapters until the character comes to life for himself.

 

So who is your mental image of Adams?

 

I think I mentioned it already somewhere: It was James Edward Olmos or - to be more precise - his Captain Adama from "Battlestar Galactica". The Captain's name - Adams - is a small hint.
