Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

The machine that Krall and his people use to extend their life turned them into the beings whose lifeforce they had stolen hence near the end Krall started to look more human when he killed the Enterprise crew and his ability to speak English returned. It also made them insane psycopaths, he had a mental breakdown when all but three of his crew were killed and their distress signal was ignored, or so he thought. Plus he was not an explorer he did not want to make peace with the Xindi and was not a fan of the Federation. I think he was a secret member of Terra Prime,
Why they did not use their ability to cross the Nebula and get back into Federation space was not explained so made no sense to me. If Kirk and crew can fix the Franklin why couldn't they?

Franklin was repaired using parts from the various spacecraft brought down by Krall for the past 100-odd years. Why they didn't use the native Altamid spacecraft to simply return to the Federation is unclear. It could be that after falling thorough the wormhole, they simply had to idea of where they were, and the Altamid ships didn't have the range for an extended journey. It wasn't until Yorktown was built and started sending probes into the nebula that finally provided the needed reference points.

That makes sense.

I saw the movie for my fourth (yes, fourth) time last night and the viewing brought up a few minor questions:

1. Why does the Enterprise slowly, majestically make her way into Yorktown when she arrives yet is able to rocket her way out upon departure like she's on some sort of slingshot? I loved both sequences but logically it didn't make a ton of sense. Simply cutting to the ship exiting the dock slowly and then "punching it" into warp would have worked just as well. My way of making it make sense is that where we see her launch from is somewhere closer to the exit, since she seems to travel less distance going out than she did going in.

2. Manis, having just taken out a bunch of red shirts in the secondary hull, proceeds to contact Krall and give him the "all clear." Krall then proceeds to punch his way into the saucer. How would Manis know it was all clear there?

3. Kirk and Jaylah beam into the area near Krall's base while already moving at high speeds. That would mean they would have had to be moving that fast prior to beaming out. The only way to do that would be to beam them somewhere outside the ship, have them get going up to speed and then beam them again from there to outside Krall's base. Yeah, it was a cool shot but again, logically doesn't make sense.

4. What was McCoy doing going through Chekov's locker in the first place? And I'm hoping he replaces whatever kind of booze he took. :guffaw:

Again, minor nitpicks that pale in comparison to my problems with ST09 and ID. This was the first reboot movie I have seen this many times in theaters and the first I haven't had to cringe or roll my eyes during.

My MO is to watch the movie twice in a short time (usually less than a week) and then wait a couple of months before the third viewing. It gives me time to mull over it.

Well, when entering, they weren't on a priority mission of mercy, so I could seem them not being in a hurry.

Either Krall was "supposed" to be in the place Manis was and they goofed the shot, or Krall went elsewhere on purpose.

Considering they wanted to take Krall by surprise, they may have thought that having the bike already moving would be their best bet. Also, between Chekov and Scotty, it shouldn't have been a problem.

I took it to mean that he swiped the booze, with no other hidden meanings to it.[/QUOTE]

That and Krall hated the Federation and everything it stood for, he wouldn't have WANTED to go back while he could do the Apocalypse Now thing on Altamid.

The transporter can clearly alter momentum and speed (and why shouldn't it, it's taking you apart and putting you back together somewhere else), otherwise Kirk and Sulu would have been smashed jam on the floor of the transporter when they were saved from falling on Vulcan.

Relativistic speed adjustment.

Krall's goal was the archive on the ship, so it's a question of where that was located. Maybe Krall likes punching things.

We've seen the transporter make adjustments to speed of individuals and compensate for inertia (Kirk and Sulu in ST 09). So, I don't think it's a problem.

With vodka, I'll bet ;)

I looked at it like vipers on the Battlestar Galactica: they would launch out of the tubes via launch assist and blast into space, but when they came in, they would slowly approach the landing bay. The Enterprise was "ejected" through a launch tube.

Oh, this one is easy. Kirk and Jaylah either beamed or rode the bike out of the ship and then began to ride along the ground until they reached their desired speed. Kirk then had Scotty initiate a site to site transport. When they beamed to the target, they were at top speed. They just cut out all that boring exposition. :)

4. What was McCoy doing going through Chekov's locker in the first place?

Flash inspection?
