News coming 8/10?

given what we know about the premise of the show, she may be the science officer. A Star Trek show with the science officer as the main character would be kind of a dream come true
I would love that, I hope that's true. Puts a whole new slant on the show if seen through a science officer's eye.

Given the name of the show and the talk about a return to exploration, it certainly seems like a strong possibility. Fingers crossed.

The idea of the main character being a lieutenant commander and not the captain of the ship is very intriguing-- given what we know about the premise of the show, she may be the science officer. A Star Trek show with the science officer as the main character would be kind of a dream come true.
I agree that's likely, though communication officer could be an interesting take as well. Actually, a whole series of it might be tiring, but an ep where you follow a story by the chatter the comm officer hears from all over the ship is an approach I don't think we've seen before.

Also an opportunity for comedy:
CAPTAIN: What's the word from engineering? We need warp drive now!
ENGINEER: [through earpiece] You tell that captain that if he wants this ship moving he can bloody well get out and push. I mean, what kind of an idiot....
COMMS OFFICER: [to captain] At least another hour, sir.

I would imagine that it will combine some of the look of the original Cage type look but with a lot of updating. I'm surprised that people are so worried about this. They probably will not throw away the entire aesthetic but it will be done through the eye of people living today (of course!).

Most people don't seem to have a problem with the 60s uniforms being slightly tweaked and updated in the new films considering how popular they are. They are still completely recognizable as TOS uniforms just with a more modern twist. They did change the look of the interiors of the ship quite a bit in the new movies but there is plenty of room for a happy medium on this show to satisfy old fans and people looking for a more modern look.

Different strokes for different folks. And TOS was one of the most expensive television shows of its time.

As much as I love TOS, watched five episodes last night, I don't think the look would translate to the here and now. Computers and interfaces have just come such a long way, as have construction techniques.

Interestingly, at a company I worked for a few years ago, there was a lot of mainframe computer equipment that looked like something straight out of TOS.

I agree that a contemporary show in 2016/17 couldn't and shouldn't look like TOS.

But I watch TOS with the same mentality that I would watch a stage play. I don't expect the sets in a play to be super detailed and ultra-realistic like some high-budget motion picture or TV show. They're just a backdrop for the characters and the performance.

TOS is like the house we grew up in. We can revisit, but it'll never have the same magic as when we lived there.

I find myself looking more forward to Discovery now, but it'll simply never be TOS. It can't have the same effect on 45 year old BillJ as TOS did on six year old BillJ. It would be silly to hold it to that standard.

Brilliantly said - it's also why I can never understand people who say Babylon 5 is unwatchable because of it's graphics (which are actually very effective) - these same people would gladly watch some wooden cow get wheeled on to a Shakespeare production, but suddenly can't lose themselves in something like Farscape's (very effective) puppets.

There had to have been some contact, as Deep Space Nine mentioned a Cardassian poet living on Vulcan in the 22nd century.
Said poet appears in ENT: Uncertain Logic by Christopher L. Bennett.

I know, I know the books aren't canon. But when has that stopped a writer?

Wish the book had been better. Got about half way through it and just couldn't take it anymore, it was so dull and so full of "small universe syndrome".

As for the show and its specifics, well, the info is good to have, but I'm really not one to analyze a show too much. Gonna go in with fresh eyes with no expectations save one: Good new science-fiction entertainment.

A lot of people get into a panic about the retro look, but on the other hand period pieces have been fairly popular lately. And if people can handle Steampunk, they should be able to handle Trekpunk.
Trekpunk! I love it!

I actually like the retro-futuristic aesthetic. I quite liked Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for that reason (that, and Angelina Jolie in an eye-patch).

The female lead is purported to be a Lieutenant Commander and the story or stories told from her perspective (may or may not be true). As for a "...male Klingon Captain" it would have to be on an "enemy" Klingon starship and a recurring adversary. If this is supposed to take place 10 years prior to TOS, a Klingon would not be commanding a Federation ship.

Or he gets rescued and is forced to stay on Discovery for whatever reason.

Eh... there's no real point debating any of this. It says it right there on the Wiki page:

"We wanted to paint a picture of Starfleet where we’re going to have new exciting aliens and also new imagining of existing aliens. We’re producing the show in 2016. We have to update the style of the effects, the style of the sets, the style of the makeup ... all of the other series have been produced [at a time that] isn’t as sophisticated as we are now with what we can do production-wise, we’re going to be reestablishing an entire look for the series—not only for the series, but for what we wanted to accomplish with Star Trek beyond this series."

Other than that, can we all agree that Bruce Greenwood as Captain Pike would be the perfect cameo/send-off role for the pilot episode? :D

If there's going to be a cameo, I think it should be a younger Scotty.

The MC see Pegg tinkering away on some transporter gizmo, and she starts chatting him up. He tells her he's working on a new/better transport re-sequence equation--less scrambled molecules. She offers to help test. So Pegg goes and stands on the transporter and she beams him out, waits a few seconds, and then rematerializes. Chris Doohan appears and they start chatting up as if nothing happened.
