Do you think LGBT characters will feature more prominently?

Why would you dye your skin? I think it depends on the reason and the reception.

Why do people wear different clothes? How is body piercing any different from skin dying or tattooing? Unless your deliberate message is racism, the act itself isn't racist, it's fashion or just trendy.

Intent matters but racism isn't always deliberate. I think you have to use common sense and common decency. There's no way we can hypothetically parse out every possibility.

Blackface doesn't bother you?
To be fair why should it? People dye their hair why not there skin?
Because it's racist.
I revisited where the association between advocating skin dying and blackface started. It was with the above posts saying different things. Yes, blackface is racist in the way it was used and therefor has a stigma attached. No, skin dying is not racist as a thing until it is used for racist purposes. So far, I suppose it hasn't been because I don't remember anyone dying their entire body to a color in real life as a freaky cosmetic trend. Not even Cher, Madonna, or Will Ferrell. And I don't think body painting counts.

Interesting how the only people who want to have a conversation about this topic are people who don't need to have a conversation about this topic and, thus, end up trading the same points.

:guffaw:

My god I can NOT wait until we have something REAL to talk about.

But we can hypothetically, if not in actual reality, parse out blackface.

This thread has turned into a British 70's sitcom. It's very strange.

I draw "the line" in the obvious place: if the actor can convincingly portray it. That's also where the line is for the producers who do the hiring, so it works out perfectly.

Why?

Who are the racist thought police who have made this rule?

Who decides whats racist or not?

To me racism depends on context. If the context is hate then its racist.
If the context has no malice its not.

Bad things happened in history, humans and life sucks. What matters is people get over themselves and move on.
I was responding specifically to Crazyewok and ancient who seem to have no problem with black face. Others picked up the ball and ran with it, which is going to happen in a group thread.

There was a NYC politician who wore blackface to a costume party a few years ago. He was trying to be funny, but it did ignore the latent racism - albeit (hopefully) unintentional - and he caught a lot of flack for that.
