What was the point of the Rhianna song?

~snip~

I really love a lot of the imagery in the music video. It's very vivid, colorful, and just plain beautiful. The song itself is actually very fitting, and some of the musical aspects of the song are reminiscent of Giacchino's score

Hello, new Facebook cover photo!

People irritated by this music video, wait until you get a load of two other trailers I saw at SS.

Nothing says Western like the music in the new Magnificent 7 trailer

I did not expect that!
I rolled my eyes in the theater when these two popped up before Beyond.

As for the song, why not? Why not have that as part of the tapestry of the marketing? Is it any worse than the 90s when movies would take dialog from films to create rap mixes?

Separate from Rihanna's song, there's a right way and a wrong way to do it, though i'd hardly be qualified enough to judge which is which.

Though not rap, Prince mixing in Batman quotes into his, um, Batman album are now considered classics, and he wasn't exactly a guy known for corporate synergy.

Sure there is a right way and a wrong way. In my opinion, "Sledgehammer" was just fine, was appropriately marketed and garnered interest in Trek from corners that may not have given the film a second look.

But, given that I'm already in the demographic that is going to see Star Trek regardless, I might not be the best judge either.

I liked it, said so the day it released. It is symbolic for a couple different themes in the film and visually quite stunning.

It didn't really add anything by slapping this celebrity onto the Trek franchise...It didn't make people want to see it more. Infact i didn't even hear the melody of the song once during the film...
Personally it made want to leave the theater, I only stayed because I wanted to see the end credits to the end.

I endured that trailer myself when I saw STBeyond.

My immediate thought, as I waited for the title to be revealed, but knowing what it had to be, was of a screenplay I once wrote for a mock-trailer short subject: The Magnificent Seven Meet the Marlboro Man. And I thought, "A remake of The Magnificent Seven that doesn't even quote Elmer Bernstein's score from the original? That would be like doing TRON: Legacy with Daft Punk instead of Wendy Carlos (oh, wait, they DID, and it didn't sound nearly as good as the original).

I guess the simple answer to the original question, was an attempt to expose Rihanna's audience to Star Trek, and feature a recognisable name to try to appeal to a broader movie audience.

I just watched the video on Youtube.

The shots of the Enterprise and Krall's hive are mixed in well with Rhianna's alien-like appearance. The video doesn't really tell a story, but the song does give a sense of what Kirk is going through: Krall is the brick and he -- Kirk -- has to become a sledgehammer....:)

Someone told Kirk to hit the brick?

It's an analogy of course.

Kirk 'hit a wall' (i.e. he lost his ship, many crew lives, and may have lost crew he's grown closer to) and Krall is one brick, albeit a big 'brick,' that Kirk has to overcome on that hypothetical wall.

With the help of his friends, Kirk is able to become that sledgehammer and come out victorious.

Well, that's one way of putting it.

You don't think the song is from Krall's POV, and Kirk is just another brick in the wall of the Federation?
