Did Something I Swore I'd Never Do...

I just placed an order for The Next Generation on Blu-ray.

They started releasing the discs, what four years ago? And I was perfectly happy just sticking with my DVDs. They're good enough to watch, got nice surround sound or so I thought. Only I've had my Blu-ray player and HD TV for five years now, watched a lot of HD stuff, and the idea of now watching those scaled up to PAL discs with 4% speed-up again is less palatable. That's why I've kept an old CRT TV going.

I still wasn't going to get the Blu-ray, only I wandered over to a South American river of an e-tailer and found the collection on sale for £55. That's exactly half what I paid for Season 1 of TNG on DVD back when that was first released. And God knows how much I spent on the videotapes of Next Gen!

So yeah, I just bought Next Generation on Blu-ray. On the bright side, that now means that CBS has enough money to release DS9 in HD, right?

The Blu-rays are awesome.

I have all the series in their lovely chunky-dvd cases but I immediately rebought [TNG, ENT & TOS] on blu-ray. The shots of the Ent-D make me go "oooh" and "aaaah" on the blu-rays which justifies the purchase alone.

The blurays are completely re-composited and different from the ground up than the DVDs. It's literally like night and day. It amazes me how often I've told people this, they don't believe me...and they always come around.

I think it's a good purchase even just for curiosities sake of how clean everything might look and the new special effects.

I'll never go back to those crummy old DVDs.
can't wait for the day when we can say this about DS9....

around here you have to order TNG blu rays online though, only TOS is available in blu at hastings and wal mart. it's BS. maybe if they TRIED to sell it, it'd sell and we can stop bellyaching about them not selling so well and using it as an excuse not to remaster DS9?! >:(

DVDs generally look like garbage on my TV. So I prefer to buy shows and movies on blu ray if they are available.

yeah, I had a 75" UHD samsung, but party animals destroyed it :(
I'd rather watch nothing than dvds. I've become like a spoiled, rich teenage girl that way.

One small, dense box rattling in a too large box arrived today... (Great packaging Amazone). Now I just have to find the time to watch it. (It's behind Babylon 5 and Band of Brothers in the queue). Had a look at the bottom of the box to learn that 2 minutes 25 seconds of footage is SD. 2 and a half minutes of upscale out of 8079 minutes is intolerable :nyah:

More worrying is the BBFC rating 12 with "infrequent bleeped and mouthed strong language" (Content advice applies only to episodes). I don't remember episodes with bleeped language!

Picard says 'merde' doesn't he? Maybe that's it!

Apparently they count extra features as episodes now, and bleeps fly in the gag reels, and a couple of the documentaries. I've been checking that the discs play for the last few days. I meant to do the whole 41 in one sitting, but I wind up watching the new documentaries and 15 minutes have passed. Definitely looks sweet though, and the upscaled footage doesn't come off too bad (Had a look at Power Play last night). I'm really looking forward to those round table reunions.

The perils of HD! Too much detail! In my run through of disc-checking I'm almost done, up to Season 6. Anyway, I pop in the disc with Cause and Effect on, press play, and there's that epic tease, the Enterprise as it's destroyed. Only on Blu-ray it looks like someone detonated an Airfix kit!

Fortunately I didn't want The Next Generation on Blu-ray just to watch the special effects.

Until recently, I was always opposed to getting Blu Rays. I have a lot of VHS tapes and DVD's. It really took seeing the remaster at a friends house to admit that they're incredible and I need them. I just bought Wrath of Khan directors cut on Blu Ray and it looks amazing. Can't wait until I have the money for TNG.

It's still £55 on Amazon UK, the same discs as the US, just different packaging. That's just over 70 dollars. Stick in postage, and you'll still be able to import it for less than a hundred, probably.
