Star Trek Discovery

If seeing people of color and other genders achieve some small measure of proportional representation in media makes you hate yourself, that sounds like a "you" problem rather than a "we" problem. I don't feel threatened by people who look different then me or are a different gender than me getting more opportunities and the ability to redress centuries of national mistreatment and under-representation however they can.

That's.... That's not quite what I think he's driving at...

The sooner we get there, the better.

Agreed. :)

@Locutus is a more patient person than I am and will often start from the most charitable assumption. It's not exactly clear what Shalashaska's driving at, but the statement "this thread makes my hate myself for being a white male" came hard on the heels of his complaining about people standing up to bigotry as "a pack of wolves," which might imply that it's the latter that was causative of the former and if true, that actually looks a lot worse.

Oh man, the patronizing in this thread is killing me.

Go on everyone, continue pretending that you're doing some kind of justice. It's entertaining me.

It's like everyone is just trying to satisfy some need of theirs to be condescending and snobbish. Like a pack of wolves leaping on prey. That sums up 90% of the people on this forum. I've never seen anything like it anywhere else on the internet.
I'm so done with all of this. No fun at all.
I hope we get some attack helicopter representation in this new series.

What is he driving at then? Because the lead up to the post I quoted about hating himself doesn't paint a very flattering picture.

I'm not going to speak for him directly, but I took him to be speaking sarcastically when he said that. I didn't take it at face value. When people say things like "white privilege." I can see someone sarcastically responding to that notion with "I hate being white." Not "I hate minorities." The extreme notions that whites cannot be the victims of racism, or that everything has to be a crusade. That's what I took away from what he said, not that he's against LBGT... That's just me though. I'll let him clarify his remarks.

In fairness so did I... but I also took it as a pretty shitty, trolling form of sarcasm of the "Ex-cuuuuse me [for being a white male], Princess!" variety.

Sarcasm can be really hard to read in plain text, as there's no voice inflection. Voice inflection is another channel of information beside the plain text, so when you're face-to-face, you have the benefit of extra information. If someone wants to be unambiguously sarcastic, it often requires a bit of art, if you want it to remain subtle. If you don't want to beat everybody over the head that you're being sarcastic, often an appropriate smiley will suffice. If you try to keep it subtle, don't be surprised if it's hard to pick up, even for people who aren't total idiots. Poe's law and so forth.

Actually if you want to drag in medical science and not your random thoughts on the subject, there is a great variation in gender among humans they just aren't that common. There are intersex people and people with chromosomes that aren't XX or XY. A basic Google search is all you need, not assumptions and guess work based on your dislike of SJWs. Male and female are just labels that can be applied to the majority of the species, but they aren't default designs. Other civilizations acknowledge that there are more than two genders
You are confusing sex and gender. Gender is about social roles. Sex is biological. The vast majority of people have XX or XY sex chromosomes. A tiny proportion of people have something else, as a result of a genetic anomaly (statistics here). Most people with anomalous chromosomes are infertile and may suffer from neurological problems. XYY seems to be the only variation without these issues. (Hermaphroditism, distinct from chromosomal anomaly, is caused by unusual behaviour of the ovum after fertilisation.)

I'm definitely not trying to put anybody down, just clarifying the facts. :vulcan:
My hope is we'll see all sorts of people on the Discovery.

While we are talking about representation, can I hope that any British cast will be more in the vein of Bashir or OBrien as opposed to the stereotype that was Malcolm?
You say "stereotype", but that is actually the way the guy talks. And unlike Picard he wasn't constantly drinking tea.

This.

Also, even the sarcastic version of that statement doesn't look any better. I mean, like, roll to hit for Jokes! That roll was a 3. It wouldn't have hit the lowliest kobold.

I didn't say he hated minorities, but sarcasm in the final post or not, the string of posts leading up to that one paint a picture of someone who is sick of hearing about minority and gender representation in the new show, so I don't see how sarcasm at the end improves upon that.

Sex and gender are different, but both are still more varied than the simple male and female labels that some would like to apply. Sex is the bits between your legs and gender is what's between your ears.

Picard was French though. Allegedly.

I meant more his writing...granted I drifted off enterprise so am perhaps not hugely knowledgeable. And yes...his accent is what my father calls Transatlantic. Non specific vaguely British like Pierce Brosnan. I was ridiculed mercilessly when my own voice drifts that way.
Wasn't he also big on family history, a bit of an aristocratic person, and turned out to be a spy?

Wouldnt surprise me if the main reason for a re-design of the Discovery is not because the producers are convinced it is a bad design, but because CBS is telling them, they see problems selling this design as merchendise, because its not attractive enough for customers.

"Say, this took a tenth of the time to design and it's going to be cheap as shit to make inferior toys of, make it the hero ship!"

"But it's fugly."

"I SAID MONEY."

It goes backwards, and forwards... it takes us to a place where we ache to go again... It let's us travel the way a child travels - around and around, and back home again, to a place where we know are loved.
