Star Trek Discovery

Methinks they should have thought about potential abbreviations before finalizing the name for the show... :wtf:

Star Trek: USS Discovery would have been better, especially if it featured the adventures of Vice Admiral Kor. :D

Kor
I think Star Trek Discover would have been best, as it fits the naming convention of the current films.

*As in it supplants Star Trek as a "to go" verb ... Go, Go Into Darkness, Go Beyond, Go Discover

I don't think anyone reasonable would deny that the shuttles were too damn old and needed to be taken out of service. But a lot of people expected a new, more advanced, more streamlined ship to take their place at NASA rather than relying on Russian shuttles and random private companies. How embarrassing lol!

Exactly. People expected a replacement to be waiting to take over.

Ugh you really have no idea what you're talking about.

First of all, the sound.
That music is horrible!
It is the most generic, derivative, History Channel Roman Empire Special sounding crap I've ever heard.
The use of that gimmicky low base sound that is in every freakin' movie trailer now and that awful cheesy sound effect when the light (over the ship name) comes on?

Seriously?
Were we supposed to gush at how cool that was?
Really?
Is it 1992?

The visual.
Babylon 5 level CGI
A golden Egyptian looking ship that looks almost exactly like this.

Which according to McQuarrie himself (FYI) was actually designed by Ken Adam-who did amazing work in the Bond films but needs to stay away from starship design.
If you HAD to go with that ugly design then why not the more refined version.

I really hope the characters and stories are good.

4. The so-called "prime" timeline is the real Star Trek timeline and the other(JJverse) never existed at all but is an abomination that is best ignored.

Ahhh what an original, mature and refreshing perspective to add to the discussion. Bravo!

It's called stockholm syndrome. Most often heard with fans of bands discussing a new album that stinks (when they don't want to accept their band is capable of making a bad album). They listen to it again and again until they convince themselves they like it.

Truly great stuff doesn't need to "grow" on you.

That's BS. I hated the Enterprise-D when I first saw it. Was completely underwhelmed by all of DS9 at first. Hated the Defiant at first. All grew on me, and I consider all pretty great.

I loved reading this thread.

Some general observations:

1. Far too early with far too little info to make any kind of conclusions. The design is clearly nothing more than animated concept art.

2. People care about a lot different shit regarding Star Trek than I do, apparently. I am grateful for that.

3. Not a single "ARRGRGRHHHHRGRGR!!!! F-U CBS YOU BASTIDS!!! I WILL NOT PAY $6 TO WATCH MY FAVORITE TV SHOW!!!! IT'S A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE!!!! WE THE FANS!!!" post in this entire thread. Progress??? I'm not holding my breath.

4. It's fun watching Star Trek fans react like a bunch of monkeys flinging their own excreted solid waste around a cage to something like this.

Just watched the 50th anniversary panel at comic con. I wish I wouldn't have though. I never really knew much about Fuller and was excited to listen to his thoughts on ST in general and the new show in particular. It turns out my impression of him let me down. Rather than just be gung-ho about the topic of ST, he chose to bring politics front and center.

I would have much rather Fuller focused on most anything else. I just want great stories and if they have some progressive message in them, fine. I have a feeling that Fuller sees it as his opportunity to focus on the political first.

Um...looks like a roulette table. Not as graceful as the D or even the E. I hope there's a good reason that comes out in dialogue as to the shape of the ship.

Excited to see more news coming out, keeping me interested.

There's no way to draw conclusions on storyline, characters or cast, etc. because we don't really know anything.

But there's definitely been enough of the ship that CBS themselves have put forward in that footage to draw a conclusion if we like that design or not.

I like the almost cartoony vibe the effects have in both the teaser and this recent, uh, other teaser. Reminds me of the same type of new graphics they added to the original series (as shown on Hulu, for instance), which itself gives it a, I dunno, kitschy sort of feeling. In the good way, of course.

But the ship's design itself? Yeah, I don't get why they did that. It doesn't look good at all, and as many others have pointed out, it looks like the love child of Terran and Klingon technology. Which could very well have been intentional given the rumors of when the show is taking place, giving the movies leading up to it, but still.

I really hope they go back to the drawing board before the show airs.

Now that I completely disagree with, at least with music. The best music takes awhile to grow on me and has the most replay value.
The things that grow on you do not initially provoke a vomit reaction.

I'm still pissed nobody has called out those idiots who kept saying "Primeverse is dead, you're just blind and ignorant if you think otherwise", and would then post that intensely annoying "NOPE" Cumberbatch JPEG to anyone who said otherwise. ...
I never got into arguments of whether it was Prime or Kelvin timeline because I either didn't care enough or wasn't bothered by either
Based on this I'd say it's pretty obvious you did care.

I never saw the vitriol from "idiots" that you imagine you saw. I did see people pointing out that using the Nu universe would make commercial sense (reasonable), and that there was no evidence of a return to Prime (true until Word of God from Fuller).

And I never Noped nobody!

Regardless of how the ship looks, I'd like there to be a return to how the crew (especially the captain and engineer) treat their ship. Treating it like a character in its own right. A hero ship. Even if it is ugly, I'd like it to have a personality of sorts, like the old Enterprise with Kirk and Scott. Personification of the vessel without the need for the ship to have a specific actor playing a hologram or computer that responds to the concept. Just a ship that has personality. The original NCC-1701 had that. The Millennium Falcon has that. It was an element that was lacking in later shows, though if they had tried I think they could have pulled it off with Tucker and the NX-01.

That's pretty much my feeling. The 80s was 'look at our space shuttle it's amazing and reusable, and the Russian one isn't!' then later on in the 2ks 'its not as reusable as we planned so we are replacing it with....asking the Russians for a lift.'
Now the cold war may have ended or get frozen, but the leading role NASA and the US took I'm space travel is gone overnight.
And there's nothing aspirational. SETI is now a hobby project, one which Pokemon Go now seems to have replaced. There's no outward looking plans, no shuttle. The moon seems further away than any time post 1969. There's a private effort to get to Mars, but news on that is more in line with a series of Big Brother naming it's contestants.
And until now, no Star Trek on TV.
I could talk about the peak of human civilisation appearing to coincide with having two Trek series on the air, but the joke has too much of a ring of truth.

We're currently in probably the greatest race for space ever..multiple countries and commercial space companies are consistently launching into space. We have 3-4 countries developing heavy lift rockets. Humans have a presence in space 365 days a year. At least 5 organizations are aiming for the moon, and 3 for Mars. The best thing about it? This time, it has very little to do with nationalism.

RAMA

We're closer to returning to space in a big way than people think. SpaceX has really been making a lot of progress towards making it cheaper, more reliable, and more efficient. You only need crack the dam for the flood to begin.
