Engineering Digital Displays?

If you check post 1 and post 8, you'll see that the black rectangle, when it got covered, was covered by a greeble that also covered the row of multicolored spaces beneath it. One would have to check to see if the greeble came and went, as post 8 shows an engineering mate checking it. Then again, it did move around engineering at least once, and that image may be from before it moved to its final space.

That image is from "Dagger of the Mind" in the transporter room and when the board was moved to the engine room the part was added halfway through the first season and remained until the end of the series. It never "came and went."

You can see the corner of it here in "Space Seed" and also as mentioned above in "Day of the Dove."

I could almost see Kang asking Marta "What does that big red button do?"
Marta would answer "Never press the big red button. It would be bad."

clever, or maybe just an old TV/movie trick, but getting some of the indicators to change color not by being an actual light, but merely a cut-out of the front panel with a movable panel behind it ... move the back panel, the "lights" would go on/off or change color.

Yes, just as I described in post #7!! :)

I remember him telling Porky he could install a little blue one to get him down, and Gazoo was banished to the prehistoric past for making a little orange button, "no bigger than your fingernail," that would destroy the whole universe if you pushed it. He never intended to use it!

Then, it's Kang reaching for the button, Mara slapping his hand with a stern "Stop that! I told you not to press the button!" as Kang sheepishly looks around to make sure none of his crew saw

By the time this display board ended up in engineering that section was covered by a gray colered greeble and was no longer visible.
As greebles/greeblies are details added to give a surface complexity, that flat gray rectangle is sort of an anti-greeble as it's hiding a bunch of detail.
