Star Trek Discovery

Ya gotta realize that some people actually like retro designs - like when the PS4 came out, people praised it's deliberately 80s-VCR-like appearance, and retro lines. People feel the same way about this ship too - although it does need neatening up. Obviously the CGI is temporary - it shouldn't even need saying that this was a quick sketch - even the cheapest stuff is photo-realistic now - let alone something like this which CBS is blowing millions on.

I love how that looks. A lot better than the ultra-curvey-no edges stuff.

That is probably one of the most wrong things ever uttered, in any form, on any media, in the history of the universe.

Even if the entire population of the universe agrees with an opinion, it does not make it objective.

Correct, which is why I chose the wording "an approximation of objectivity"

Consider the sense of smell in humans. Virtually all human beings find the smell of manure repellent. Is it therefore an objective truth that manure smells bad? No, not in the truest sense? There might be a smattering of humanity that actually, through some twisted quirk of their wiring enjoys the smell of manure. Maybe they got the wiring of a dung beetle somehow.

But if the scale of consensus is so vast, do we really need to qualify the statement that manure smells bad to human beings is not an objective truth? I say no, because the consensus is so widespread that it can be taken to be a closer approximation to an objective truth, not REALLY objective, but functions just the same in actual raw numbers.

The question then becomes, is there anything in the world of aesthetic taste that has that kind of universal agreement? Usually no, it's REALLY hard to get strong consensus of things like beauty, that's why you see people buy fiat multiplas and nissan leafs, or worse, people that think Jackson Pollock paintings are beautiful and meaningful (that's right, I went there). But every once in awhile, there is a work or art, a piece of music, a ship design that is so universally reviled that it actually strikes a discord against the taste preferences of the bulk of humanity. And this ship comes damn close.

I'm still pissed nobody has called out those idiots who kept saying "Primeverse is dead, you're just blind and ignorant if you think otherwise", and would then post that intensely annoying "NOPE" Cumberbatch JPEG to anyone who said otherwise.

It's just funny looking at it now that all those people have disappeared. I never even experienced it myself, I never got into arguments of whether it was Prime or Kelvin timeline because I either didn't care enough or wasn't bothered by either, but some of those debates I read were just mindbogglingly childish and biased.

Death to that damned jpeg. And damned is the short version of what I would say, if I wasn't worried swearing is against the rules. And I am from London, and therefore have heard and used a vast quantity of swear words, all of which I would use. Possibly twice. Regardless of my position on prime universe (I felt it should be prime, logically, as well as personally, and did indeed receive many cumberbatch jpegs...which of course just waste my data and bandwidth.) I hate that damn thing. It doesn't even make sense.

"A ship is a ship."
"Aye sir, thy will be done."

Discovery is a good name for a ship. It's also a good mission for a ship.

The design. Never was big on Planet of the Titans designs, and I think the secondary hull (including the wings here) should be a little smaller so that it has more of a "TOS-E" balance to the shape. I love the saucer section though. Looks really nice. Some really cool details on there.

I am understandably curious to see where we go from here. :)

Discovery was my favorite Shuttle so they have a good name for the show.

She was the Star shuttle....I always had a soft spot for the Endeavour though. And Atlantis thanks to space camp.
The end of the shuttle program was a step back for mankind, though I understand the effect those various tragedies had.
I have always had more chance of being declared Pope than ever being an astronaut, but even I dreamed of flying the space shuttle. Now...There's nothing to dream of for kids. The highest hope is being fired in a can to go live in a bigger can, before being dropped back down to earth...in a can.
From that perspective, a starship approximately the same colour as the inside of a can makes sense, it could be a little more aesthetically pleasing though.
If zefram cochineal didn't need stanchions thicker than a Klingons cranium, I am pretty sure the Discovery doesn't.

The Space Shuttle, while "cool", was bankrupting NASA. It just cost too much to operate and stifled the entire agency.

Oh, and what are "stanchions"? are you referring to the nacelle pylons?

It IS funny how they just vanished. Thought they knew it all and that a simple NOPE was answer enough. Cumberbatch is now saying YEP!

Even Reddit had something to say about it

I think the Discovery will grow on a lot of people over time when they see the show. I'm actually kind of alright with it, it's not the worst.

The Millennium Falcon is a literal pile of junk, yet Disney executives would be shot and murdered if they ever destroyed it.

Indeed, and it's capabilities, given it's expenses, were somewhat... Limited. Something with more function for actual space-flight would be good. The idea of having a reusable space craft is a good one.

You're hovering very close to a good point. I think the reason something can "grow" on people, like The Falcon (Though I don't think anyone ever looked at the Falcon and actually agreed with Luke.), it's not just the design... It's the deeds associated with the design. We like Han Solo, and Chewie, and their deeds as characters... So we end up feeling Han's attachment to his ship.

I wager the same will happen with Discovery. In a way.

Funny how the only way you can conceive of a honest difference of opinion is to equate those who disagree with you to having the mental wiring of a dung beetle.

Methinks they should have thought about potential abbreviations before finalizing the name for the show... :wtf:

Star Trek: USS Discovery would have been better, especially if it featured the adventures of Vice Admiral Kor. :D

Everything is better with Kor.

Sometimes cool is part of the game for drawing funding and whotnot.

Yes...stanchions, pylons, them sticky out bits there, warp plasma conduits, doodads, masts, damned ugly triangles of misbegotten cheese. :)

I don't think anyone reasonable would deny that the shuttles were too damn old and needed to be taken out of service. But a lot of people expected a new, more advanced, more streamlined ship to take their place at NASA rather than relying on Russian shuttles and random private companies. How embarrassing lol!
