Living Witness
There are those episodes in Star Trek that mean more than your typical episode. Whether it's a famous episode like City on the Edge of Forever, or an episode that showcases the acting talents of it's star like The Inner Light, or those episodes that reasonate emotionally for the viewer like DS9's The Visitor. Well, Voyager had at least one episode like that, and it was called Living Witness. I've already said the Scorpion 2 parter is my favorite episode of the series, and I love Before and After. I think Living Witness is right up there in my top 5 of favorite episodes of Voyager. This was Star Trek at it's very very best, telling an emotional story while providing social commentary along the way.
I watch this episode, and I think about what is going on in our culture today. The Propaganda being spewed is insane, and this episode did a great job showing that, how a race war that has lasted centuries can be fueled in an instant. This episode showed the addage, "History is written by the victors" to full effect, and the stuff with the Doctor was really poignant. I really paid attention to the final scene between Quarran and The Doctor, how The Doctor thinks he's a symbol in this war and his version of events doesn't matter in the long run. The simple fact that it does matter as to bring in a new era of piece, and then we see that result was really the icing on the cake for me in this episode.
I also loved the mirror universe aspects. Love Seven and her borg drones, love the fact that there was a Kazon on the ship, and the brute mentality of Janeway really gave Mulgrew a realistic chance to do something different. Still, the themes of this episode are extremely poignant, and I do think this is one of the best episodes of the series. Also, for it being directed by Tim Russ for the first time, that was a fantastic directorial debut.
