The Twilight Zone Original Series

Anyone love this series and watch it all the time? If so do you know why Netflix does not have season 4?

I love it. Series 4 are the one hour episodes I think. Not sure why or if that would be the reason.
Great show Rod Serling was a genius

Season Four was indeed the season they went with hour-long episodes. This was generally considered a mistake, so the show went back to half-hour eps for its fifth and final season.

The hour-long eps tend to be shown less often, because they don't fit into the same-sized time slots, but, yeah, I'm not sure why that would matter where Netflix is concerned. Do they charge by the minute or the size of the file?

It's a single monthly fee for the whole service, so length doesn't matter. No idea why they'd skip season 4.

It's one of my favorites and one of the all-time classic TV series. I can't say that I watch it frequently, though, since I don't have that much time. If I was retired, I'd probably go back to it more often. I certainly put it on whenever there's a Marathon on Sciffy.

One of the best TV series of all time, if not the best.

When you're used to modern TV shows it's refreshing. There isn't some massive chase or explosion in the first thirty seconds. The show takes its time to slowly build toward payoff, and the payoffs are some of the best ever. Miss those days where writers weren't forced to assume the viewer would get bored in the first 45 seconds.

Most old shows are like that-- very story driven with strong characters. Now the emphasis is on "arc-based" storytelling, which is all about gimmicks and reveals and everything-you-believed-to-be-true-is-wrong.

I would say the emphasis now is on never risking the audience's attention span. A big explosion or chase or sex scene every 45 seconds. A series of small, fast moving payoffs instead of a patient build to a large payoff.

Arc based storyline has resulted in some of the best storytelling on TV with shows like Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones, it's only when it's done wrong that it's only based on twists. If anything arc based storytelling done right can lead to even larger payoffs.

Depending on the show. Some shows end up falling flat on their face due to poor pacing and/or bad writing. The Twilight Zone wasn't perfect but it was good and has held up pretty well.

That sounds like someone very familiar (that last bit there about gimmicks and everything you believed to be true is wrong). Too bad it didn't work out that well (The XF). My patience with CC has worn thin.

Thank god for the Twilight Zone.

^^ What's CC?

Things are definitely geared toward short attention spans. This is especially true of comedies. I've tried to watch a few contemporary comedies, like Mindy Project and New Girl and Fresh Off The Boat, and I kinda like them, but I always get the feeling that I'm watching the highlights from last week's episode instead of an actual story.

Sure. It's the difference between short stories and a novel. But the problem is that arc-based storytelling is pretty much mandatory now, and it's not easy to do.

Last summer, for a Facebook page devoted to THE TWILIGHT ZONE, I drew a simple drawing illustrating a scene from an episode, a different one each day. I did this for 156 straight days, until I had illustrated every episode, in a random order. To give you an idea of how bad my artwork is, here is the first of those sketches I posted:

Truth be told, I have always preferred The Outer Limits. But I do enjoy much of the original Twilight Zone.

Yep, TZ is an all time classic. I keep meaning to pick up the disc set, that way I am not at the mercy of Netflix.

Comparing the two shows is the proverbial apples and oranges. Outer Limits was science fiction; Twilight Zone was more fantasy-oriented, with a handful of episodes that were straight offbeat drama with no fantastic or supernatural elements.

Needs more sweat!

I lucked out. My Brother, being an even bigger TZ fan than me, had the complete series on DVD. When he decided to upgrade to Blu Ray, I got his DVDs for a hundred bucks.
