Trek 4 to bring together Chris Pine & Hemsworth?

This is really bizarre. I don't ever recall a studio/producer/production company announcing a sequel in this way.

Marvel & Disney announce their franchise movies years in advance. We already know when the new Star Wars movies are going to come up for the next few years, etc. That has been one minor thing with the new Star Trek movies. Paramount has been doing a "Wait & See" approach with the films.

They appear to be fast tracking this one. I am surprised, though, that the pre-Beyond writing team was brought back, minus Orci to boot. Maybe they had a chance to retool their script more to the Abrams or the studio's liking?

minus Orci to boot.
whats happening with Orci now? its like hes dropped off the planet since his ST3 fell apart

Yes, I believe so, and it was reported that the script they wrote involved time travel. So I'm guessing we're getting time travel in ST4. I don't exactly love the idea.

(maybe they adapting their and Orcis ST3 story for ST4 with Hemsworth instead of Shat?)

Paramount may just be low-balling any role Orci has in the next film because of previous toxicity between him and some fans. I won't be surprised in the least if his name eventually gets attached to the project even if it is only a credit in the finished film.

I find it ironic that both Fourth movie that features the TOS characters is dealing with Time travel. Talk about an Homage.

Earth will be endangered by an alien probe, and the only way to prevent its destruction is for Kirk et al. to go back in time and retrieve his father's pet humpback whale....

Hm, interesting.
It has become quite common in Hollywood to announce a sequel right before the first movie hit's the screens, in an attempt to show confidence in the movie (remember how a Fan4stic-sequel was announced right before F4 was released? Yeah...).
That they also announced Chris Hemsworth is remarkable, though. I guess that their story idea depends on Chris Hemsworth, so the studio made a deal with him already (much like they needed RObert Downey Junior right from the beginning for "Civil War" - thus made a deal with him before writing the script). And the studio just announcing it because Hemsworth is actually a big deal.

So, either 1) George Kirk somehow survived or 2) time travel. I'm guessing the latter. Since the new movie crew seems desperate to move the direction of the new movies back to more resemble classic Trek and the prime timeline. Maybe even a "Days of future past"-crossover event? Wouldn't even be mad if they try to retcon the new universe to fit better with the old one...

Here's my hunch: There were rumors back in 2014 when the first script of what now is known as Star Trek Beyond was basically thrown out by Paramount that the story involved both the Prime and Kelvin timelines. My guess would be rather than time travel, George Kirk from the Prime Reality somehow ends up in the Kelvin verse?

my first thought upon hearing this news is that they will be working in the mirror universe. Mirror-George.
Interesting you mention that, because Chris Pine casually mentioned in an interview about a week ago that he wanted to play Evil Kirk in the mirror universe.

I didn't think anything of at the time, but with this new news it makes me wonder if that's what they're going for.
