Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

That's cool then. 7 women isn't bad. How many men though?

EDIT: In those images it seems to be 7/9 albeit Chekov, Spock, and Uhura being absent so 7/10 normally? That's not too bad.

I must admit, I've only watched them twice each and not recently. In most of the close ups of the stations there seem to be more men on average. It may just be the camera angles. Still, progress is progress.

Of course, I have yet to see the new movie. I'm sure Jaylah is going to be a refreshing female character. I will judge it on balance obviously.

Make that 8 women on bridge stations, I found one more in my folders:

I must admit I never counted the bridge men before but using the same screenshots I count 10. Uhura & Chekov are missing but Spock is there in the background. So about 9 women & 11 men.

I believe Pegg wrote larger roles for women because of reaction to STID. We have at least 3 major new female characters with good parts and one of them is Jaylah, who is getting very good reviews from the premieres and press screenings.

It is tricky to do comparisons between movies and TV shows. I'm sure they occasionally hit the mark. In general, there are twice as many male characters as female in every Star Trek show.

I also just remembered that NuChekov 'does a Kirk' to the female transporter officer in ST09. Unlike Kirk, at least he saved them I suppose lol.

Killjoys seems better than average because the female characters appear in diverse roles, faction leaders, gang bosses, brood mares etc. It also objectifies men and women to a roughly equal degree.

I noticed in the first few episodes of the Expanse that the roles were starting to look divided along gender lines (e.g. hookers vs miners) but they pulled it back somewhat later on with female starship crew, female thugs etc. Probably still more men overall but it shows that it is possible to move in the right direction, The infamous Carol scene in particular does make you question if Star Trek still doesn't get that there is a direction to move in.

I'm a TMP fan so I only really bother to pay close attention to TMP screen shots and bridge positions. NuTrek bridge is a lot busier! It's a shame - in the publicity stills for STiD, they have only two women on the bridge. Curious.

It's also a shame they didn't have any women escorting Kirk off the bridge in 09 or escorting Khan in STiD or accompanying Cupcake to Qo'nos. Quite low on women in engineering too. So near and yet so far. Checklist starting to look more appealing again ;-P

I'd like to see more female security officers too, I thought of that watching the previous films.
I don't entirely agree with the engineering though, I remember quite a few ladies down in the brewery. (I don't seem to have kept screenshots to back it up though)

In any case, I think we can agree that there have been definite improvements but still, more needs to be done. Lets see what's in STB.

With how strong some of the alien threats are in Trek, why is there even an abundance of human security forces in Starfleet. In these new films Kirk gets his arse handed to him whenever he tries to engage in a fist fight, so why not deploy species who are stronger and faster.

How'd that work out with Worf? ;)

The stronger you make the security officer the more likely they will end up getting their asses kicked, because they start being used as a shorthand to establish how badass a new enemy is by showing them coming in and immediately knocking aside the strongest member of the bridge crew or away team. Worf ended up protecting the floor with his body a lot.

They even named a trope after it. :)

This video has a pretty big spoiler for Beyond. It's also an incredibly cool promo, Idris Elba is 100% badass.
Oh my God Krall was a Franklin crewmember! Altamid was an abandoned Federation colony world!

ETA: King, I put the video in spoiler code, because the thumbnail is itself a spoiler.

Holy crap, that is an amazing development, and addresses one of my key issues with casting a great actor like Elba
and then burying him in layers of makeup and prosthetics.
Totally worth it now that the reason for doing that is known.

WOW. #MicDrop

Just hope some jackass doesn't decide to edit the Wiki entry and blow the spoiler wide open.

Oh and speaking of spoilers, here's another POSSIBLY ALMOST AS MAJOR A SPOILER about Krall that I found on the IMDB comments:

He is indeed human, a veteran of the Xindi war, and was the captain of the Franklin. The natives of Altamid, the planet where the ship crashed, could extend their lives, so Krall stole that technology and used it on himself. That's why he looks like an alien.

I watched the newest trailer on Facebook earlier today, and I really wish I hadn't. What it revealed about Krall was something they really should've kept out of the promotional campaign...

Holy crap!!!!!!! damn!
So that means he must have served under Archer if he's a veteran of the Xindi War

I've been so damn careful about spoilers for Beyond and the damn Star Trek official Facebook feed has that video that blows open the Krall spoiler autoplaying...I just thought it was one of the commercials I'd seen and by the time I realized it, it was too fucking late.:mad::mad:
