Has io9 ever said anything positive about the Kelvin Timeline?

Craveonline said a couple of nice things:

It’s strange that a film like Star Trek Beyond would feel like a quintessential Star Trek story, especially when you consider that this series has been behind some of the most memorable science fiction tales of the last 50 years. It’s a romp, really, but perhaps that’s what we needed right now. If every story is the most important story ever told, then every story starts to feel the same.

And similarly:

They don’t all have to be The Wrath of Khan. They don’t all have to be The Undiscovered Country. Sometimes they can just be First Contact or Star Trek Beyond, fabulous tales of daring-do about awesome people doing awesome things, touching upon some philosophies but mostly just leading by example. Be better people, don’t let bullies win, and most importantly… live long and prosper.

And, yet, Wrath of Khan is constantly used as a bench mark.

The thing is, I can remember folks saying TWOK felt like an extended TOS TV episode, and that wasn't necessarily said as a compliment. It's interesting that same feeling is conveyed in some STB reviews, but favorably so.

As Trek movies go, descriptions of the plot of STB as rather thin merely reminds of TVH. Let's face it, the plot of that story was pretty thin, yet it was very entertaining and probably the most popular Trek movie among general audiences and a lot of fans.

The only thing I fear from the reviews I've read is STB is "too 'Star Treky'." :D

(Actually, I'm excited as hell. Bring it on!)

I have no doubt that TWOK was the much maligned film as it was quite different from TMP, and Meyer brought his own Abramsesque changes to the franchise. But, it feels like, since FC, that TWOK is the go to film that people will compare Trek films too. "Is this the new Khan?" "A villain like Khan?" etc.

I'm all excited for STB (checked the date again today :D) but I know that the comparisons will be coming.

From early indications, BEY is an optimistic romp with a larger message that's reminiscent of a TOS adventure.

Perfect for the 50th anniversary. Exactly what I was wanting.

Can't wait to see it.

Said it here before, but after the second trailer I thought BEY could be a special addition to the Trek franchise. It possesses all the ingredients for a great Star Trek story, and if it is what I'm hoping, this iteration of Trek might just be hitting its stride.

A lot of trek websites are giving the film good reviews and that is promising.

I can't wait for Ex Astris Scientia to review thee film because they are the harshest website when it comes to embracing the new movies.
I love the picture of the crew on the bridge with two caveats - I'd prefer it if they had established alien races instead of random new ones and, seriously, 11 men and 4 women? They even have 5 new male characters and only 3 new women. GENDER EQUALITY IS REALLY NOT THAT HARD! Can't these people count?

Gender equality is important, but by the same token, I don't want a movies creative decisions driven by a checklist.

I say we wait and see about the quality of the female characters before complaining about quantity.

I expect both quantity AND quality. It has been 50 years and we've never had both. Sometimes we've had neither. I get my hopes up every time and they disappoint me. Nonetheless, you are correct that I should reserve final judgment for after the movie.

As for Ghostbusters, while it appears superficially sexist to have four women and one man as the main characters, I will also reserve judgment for after the movie. Despite four prominent women, the overall cast looks more balanced. I was expecting to see more men than women overall and, while that does look true, it doesn't look as if the four leads will be alone in a sea of men, so that's hopeful.
