Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

Not necessarily. Clever writers can always make up some work around. For example, the next movie could say that Starfleet has an "online education" program where cadets can stay on a Starship and take courses remotely. Then you could have Jaylah in a starfleet cadet uniform, serving on the Enterprise, while she takes her "online courses". Give her some throwaway lines like "I have to get back to my quarters to finish that subspace physics assignment that is due tomorrow". Voila. You can have her on the ship while explaining why she is in Starfleet so quickly.

Didn't Wesley and Icheb do something like this?

Didn't Wesley and Icheb do something like this?

yes they did which just supports my point that it would be very easy to explain her presence on the Enterprise in the next movie if the writers wanted to include her. There is no need for the next movie to skip 4-5 years so that Jaylah can graduate from Starfleet.

I'm intrigued by one comment: "Fun, pretty dark, lots of fan moments" [underlining added]
Everyone's talking about the fun, but if there's a dark edge that's cool too.

With Affleck as Spock, obviously. It coulda worked!

About 12 hours ago I found a 15 min review of STB on Youtube. It was not favourable. I watched a few minutes of it, but then gave up due to combination of relentless negativity and unstructured rambling.
Interestingly, his comments echoed my recently voiced opinions on GotG. Stuff happens but the overall effect is empty. Now, others have commented already that Beyond is structured around
trying to get/keep a macguffin
, but from the clips we've seen in the ads, plus comments from behind the scenes, we know there is also a lot of Trekness going on.
The strange thing is that the reviewer kept insisting on two contradictory things: 1. I'm a regular Joe who knows almost nothing about Star Trek. 2. This is not Star Trek!
I can't help wondering if he is some JJ-hater in deep cover: "Hello, normal people, I am a normal just like you! And I have some normal, completely objective remarks to make about how JJ Abrams deliberately destroyed Star Trek due to a bunch of obscure things none of you noticed or cared about..."
Damn, that review is pretty disheartening.

I think writing off any bad review as "just another JJ hater!", is ignorant and unfair. I'm going to wait to see the film myself and I'm still excited, but his complaints are perfectly feasible. I'm just hoping he's wrong, because after all the fun action set pieces and witty one-liners, there needs to be a story that stands up to rewatches and layers that can be stripped off with each viewing. I like some of the Fast & Furious films because they're well-made all-out action and lots of fun, but I wouldn't watch them more than once or twice. Star Trek is a very different franchise when it comes to that for me at least.

Most of the reviews are very positive though, which is the strangest thing. I guess we'll find out more later today.

As I pointed out in the Collider thread, 100% of the reviews will not be positive. Why are you putting so much emphasis on this one when it's vastly outnumbered so far?

The reviewer was a very young girl. I find it interesting that women reviewers tend to bring up completely different points than many male reviewers. Just an observation.

I've rewatched STID 14 times so far. I find it extremely rewatchable.

As usual of course, reviews have no affect on my decision to see a movie. I just find them to be one facet of the overall reaction to a movie.

RAMA

That's a grown man, not a young girl

Like I said, it's only somewhat disheartening. The reason I'm putting more emphasis on that review is because it's the only one that's gone in-depth, every other review has been a tweet raving about how great it is but they don't explain why. This is the only review out where the reviewer has talked about why they didn't like it. Like I said, we won't know anything really until tonight when official reviews are out, but for now, this is the only one we have.

It's nice that you find STID very rewatchable though, I'm not a big fan of that film myself, but to each his own.

I made a decision after my experience with STID to have my own review embargo. Reading the reviews left me so disheartened that I didn't see the film for two weeks after release, which I immediately regretted.

I don't trust reviewers any more, and, if a film appeals to me, then I'll go see it. Pure and simple.

Never got the love for Rand. Think I'd like to have a new female character with no baggage carry over from TOS.
I've no particular affection for Rand, but as demonstrated by Uhura and Chekov, the TOS characters can be reinvented and updated for modern times.

If this was REAL Star Trek, this scene would be at least 30 seconds longer. #NotMyTrek

I'm not sure if this is a funny post or a serious one! If serious, would those extra 30 seconds consist of a briefing room segment to discuss what they should do while the ship is being ripped to shreds?

Also, this is a Paramount made movie, so it IS real Star Trek. Get over it!
