LEGO The Force Awakens Video Game, movie and original content

My mom and I started playing this this morning, and so far it's been great. I love that they actually got the movie cast to record new dialouge, it's nice to have the consistency.
It does crack me up how they work around some of the more violent content. I like how they had Finn get hit with an apple during the attack on Lor San Tekka's village, rather than getting the bloody handprint. But I do find it a little weird that they had Chewie getting a crate dropped on him rather than getting shot in the arm. It seems like a weird choice to change that when you are spending the whole game shooting people, and just a couple minutes later you're blowing up explosive crates that a Rathtar is holding.
So far we've playing through the first new story, where you're playing as Poe, C-3PO and BB-8 on a mission to rescue Admr. Ackbar from a First Order Star Destroyer.

I was a little surprised by the cast recording new dialog, the games I've played in the past (Indiana Jones and Star Wars: The Complete Saga) didn't have any dialog that I can remember. It was all grunting I think. Some of the new stuff is pretty funny, I cracked up when Kylo is trying to Force pull the lightsaber to him in the finale and he's like: There's something wrong... I don't understand... I could just walk over and pick it up but that wouldn't look as cool. I wonder how much coaxing it took to get Harrison Ford to say Wookiee Cookies.

I just wish that in Free Play they'd let you select your party. You can pick your main character and then they automatically fill the rest in for you. Often with characters that you don't need and you'll constantly have to go into the menu and select the other characters you do need, but as soon as you switch away from them they're gone and to get them back you have to go back into the menus. Plus I always seem to get JJ Abrams or Kathleen Kennedy added to my party. Or both. With all these classic and new Star Wars characters to choose from why on Earth would I want to play as JJ and Kathleen? The flying controls are really clunky as well, but since the game is so easy and you pretty much can't lose it's not that big of a deal.

Most of the games since the second DC game have had voice acting and dialogue. For the movie games they've used the actual dialogue from the movies and for their original games, like the DC games and the first Mavel game, they had their own scripts and casts. TFA is the first time they've used a combination of movie and original dialogue.
I usually just go into the menu to change characters anyway, so I'm not really that bothered by who they give me during free play.
It took me a while to get the hang of the flying.

I'm enjoying it...freezes too much...the flying is a pain...lego can never seem to get the flying quite right

I do too but the characters you change to will disappear if you have to switch to a different one to use a character specific object. If you're going through trying to grab all the minikits/bricks and your party doesn't have the right types of characters (which they usually don't) you'll be be going in and out of that menu so much that it starts to get really old. Ideally, if they're not going to let you choose your party, they'd at least fill it out with characters who have the different skills you'll need. It appears to just be random though.

I've had it freeze a few times but not so much that it's become a big problem. It happens more than any other game I own though. There are a lot of bugs, I have 2 achievements that won't unlock so unless they randomly pop later 100% isn't going to be happening for me.

I haven't had it freeze up on me yet, but I have had that happen with some of the other LEGO games, so it probably will eventually.
I see what you're saying now about the characters they give you in free play. They usually have been good about giving you characters with powers you'll need, I can see where it would be annoying if they aren't here.
I haven't done any free play yet, we always play through the story first, and we just finished the Eravana level.

I think you've got that a little backwards. Part of the draw of the Lego game series has always been about the humor involved. Sometimes they use that to also get around the bloodier bits of the franchise they're adapting, but that really isn't the main purpose of it. Every lego game I've ever played altered storylines in similar ways, primarily because they were supposed to be amusing.

Lego Dimensions uses a combination as well. Although that's a very different type of game. And I could've sworn that at least some of the dialog in Lego Jurassic World was also new, wasn't it?

That's exactly how the series used to work - the old Lego Star Wars, for instance. I like this series of games a lot, yet for some reason even as they actively (and impressively) improve their new titles, they also have an annoying habit of undoing or messing up things that used to be fine.

Oh, I love the humor, and I thought the apple thing with Finn was great, I just was surprised they changed Chewie getting shot in the arm. I thought it was weird that they felt him getting shot in the arm needed to be changed, when you spend most of the game shooting other people and blowing things up.

I don't really know the JP/W movies well enough to know. I just remembered that they did have Clark Gregg, Colbie Smulders, Hayley Ming-Na Wen, and Michael Pena do new dialogue for the Avengers game, so I guess this isn't the first time original actors recorded new dialogue for a LEGO game.

I don't think I'm really spoiling anything here, but the weird thing I thought was that they really didn't change Han's death all that much. It's not as graphic as I'm pretty sure they didn't show the saber going through his body, but you still hear it ignite and see the pained/surprised look on Han's face as he goes falling off the bridge. After they changed Lor San Tekka's demise (just getting Force pushed off into the sky and maybe he's not even really dead) and what you were mentioning about Chewie, I thought they'd find some kind of way to work around it. In the end they don't even show Finn getting knocked out and put into a coma, he gets injured and moves around slower but nothing serious.

Well I've played/done/collected everything, for me these Lego games don't have a whole lot of replay value once you've done everything. For a while at least, I'm sure they're fun to play down the road but they're not something I'd just replay all the time. So I'm probably shelving it until the Season Pass DLC comes out. Has there been any word on when that is? I thought I had read that this game was going to have online multiplayer and PvP dogfights, but either I misread or the article was mistaken. I figured I'd get a little more play out of this game that way but after playing the flying missions I'm kind of glad it doesn't. I'd just get killed because I'm not good enough with these controls to be competitive against anything except Lego AI.

I haven't heard anything about DLC beyond the ones that are already out, the ESB and Jedi character packs, and the Droid back that comes with droid characters and The Phantom Limb level.

We finished up the story last week. It still surprises me just how little of the last few games are taken up by the stories.

The way I understood it was that the Season Pass was going to have more DLC after launch but they hadn't released any details or a schedule. Once again maybe I misunderstood or the article I was reading was mistaken. But Season Pass usually means you'll be getting DLC down the line, at least in my experience.

They released a bunch of DLC stuff over the course of several months for Avengers and Batman 3, so I'm pretty sure there will be more that we just haven't heard about yet.

Here's what you have to look forward to:

Poe's Quest for Survival - How did our favorite Resistance pilot survive that TIE fighter crash and make it to D'Qar from Jakku, all on his own?

First Order Siege of Takodana - The attack on Maz Kanata's castle from the First Order's POV...

Escape from Starkiller Base - Two Resistance pilots have been shot down during the climatic battle, but survived the crash. Can they find a way off the planet before it explodes?

They sure are. :D

There's also The Phantom Limb, which picks up where the existing bonus story mission 'Trouble over Taul' left off and explains why C3P0 has a red arm. Basically a video game adaptation of the C3P0 tie-in comic book from a few months ago. That one, however, is a Sony bought-and-paid for PS4 exclusive level.
