I usually use the tern "naturalistic" for something that has a mostly grounded real world look and feel, and I think that both Marvel and DC qualify but both have different approaches. One is stylized to look more dark and gritty and the other leans more toward fun and levity.

They knew what they were shooting, and selected all that made the final cut. BVS was intended to be grim, with its very up-front themes of Superman not acting as God, the mass murder at the hearing, Batman/Wayne's mission to kill (murder) Superman, etc. That's not the CW Flash, or any other lighter material, so if the producers claim they were not trying to be "super serious," then they must have been working on another film at the same time BVS was written, shot and finished. Further, there was a noisy group of fans who complained about how dark BVS (and Man of Steel) was, comparing it to the "lighter" moments or tone in the Marvel movies--Civil War included. They were not complaining for no reason.

I specifically said that they made a choice to make this movie dark. The point was that the choice was in reference to this particular movie, not to the entire dc franchise. I was responding to your claim that this movie had to be serious because the entire dc franchise is supposed to have that tone. That simply isn't true.

I watched the Ultimate Edition last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. I really wish this had been the version released in theaters.

I like Snyder as a director. His visual style is wonderful but he needs direction. One of the reasons I think Man of Steel worked so well is that he had a producer to rein him in. Left to his own devices, Snyder is going to make a 3 hour movie every time and if that's not what WB wanted, then they should have gotten a strong producer to help out on BvS. Man of Steel, IMO, is one of the best superhero movies ever made and you can see a lot of Nolan's influence on the film.

From what we've heard about Justice League, it looks like they're taking a lighter tone. I have no problem with a lighter tone but I hope they don't Marvelize the film. Avengers AoU and Captain America Civil War were complete wastes of money and the last thing I want is Steppenwolf threatening thousands of lives and Superman punching him repeatedly while saying "go to sleep, go to sleep, go to sleep."

Agreed. The cheesy one liners and cheap laughs need to stay in the past with Schumacker and Clooney.

Oh? Two films in--MOS & DOJ, and they were decidedly dark. Accident?

No matter how Suicide Squad turns out, do you think Wonder Woman (especially in the wake of how she was portrayed in DOJ) will be a lighter film? Her origin film is set in a brutal period of time, and to sell her as the last part of DC's power trio, her debut solo film not only has to be larger than life (obviously), but explain the source of her telegraphed lines (to Superman) in DOJ, about killing creatures from other worlds, and her general personality. This will not...or cannot be Guardians or Deadpool.

Well, no. But it can be Thor or Captain America.

So, you don't think they're gonna do Ares?! She's just gonna fight Germans and Turks? Because, honestly, that does not sound like things from other worlds.

No its just that is sounds like they are still dealing with World War I whilst doing that instead of going off and ignoring it to fight a 3rd faction that poped up.

I think you're taking these comparisons way too literal. And concentrating way too much on the Captain America one, instead of Thor.

They most definitely won't create their own Hydra to "replace the Nazis", so to speak. But, I suspect, they'll have Ares orchestrating the different armies to fight each other, and they certainly will have some monsters or some such, because Wonder Woman needs an actual challenge on a physical level.

That said, this discussion was really more about tone.

Thank f***.

WW will probably include a supernatural enemy (perhaps related to the Angel of Mons?), but I think the point of the film will be her disillusionment with the barbarism of men.

Horrible movie that BvS. Only good thing was Ben's Batman. Messy editing, messy "plot" Silly and totally unnecessary (bad enemy choice) Doomsday, Ridiculous Luthor (what they were thinking?!?) Skinny Wonder Woman, Zero charisma (and way too short) Cavill (If you need a wooden actor, who you gonna call!?!)

Not much good to say about this movie, even worse than Man of Steel and also whatever it takes, kick Zack Snyder out! Or shitty (mostly) DC movies are all we gonna get till the end of times.

I didn't notice this before.

No matter how Wonder Woman turns out, it still means absolutely nothing about whether a movie *has* to be dark and serious to be in the current dc universe. Suicide Squad is very clearly not serious. Justice League has already been stated by the creators to not be so dark. Therefore, BvS most definitely did not have to be dark and serious, either. They simply chose to make it that way.

They keep saying that not every movie in the DCEU is going to have the same tone, and so far I think Suicide Squad is clear evidence that they aren't lying. WW may not have as much humor as SS, but I don't see why it would have to be as dark as BvS. I could maybe see a bit of fish out of water humor if/when Diana leaves Themyscira, and maybe some based of off her showing up to save a bunch of tough guy soldiers from a monster or something.

Right, because we all know it's impossible to have any humor in a movie or TV series about a war.
I'm not talking about turning it into GoTG or Suicide Squad, I'm just saying that there could at least be more humor and lighter moments than there were in BvS.
